Primary Objectives
The Auto Mechanic is a key line-level position responsible for performing work of moderate difficulty in diagnosing repairing overhauling and servicing a variety of automotive vehicle. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. PCI Employees are expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs and departmental objectives as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Inspects brakes and electrical testing.
  • Repairs and replaces brakes and hydraulic systems.
  • Inspects services and repairs suspension and steering systems.
  • Performs vehicle alignment and adjustment.
  • Repairs transmissions and transaxles.
  • Performs heating and air-conditioning maintenance and repair including refrigeration addition and recovery.
  • Conducts software upgrades and computer diagnostic evaluations on engine ignition fuel air induction and exhaust emissions control etc.
  • Performs duties and assignments as administered by the internal Maintenance Control Software System (EMAINT) and via the EMAINT program services functions and activities as per Public Works standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring the duties of their position are performed in a safe efficient effective and timely manner.
  • Performs emergency tire repairs and replacements.
  • Performs major engine repairs.
  • Performs basic cutting and welding procedures.
  • Analyzes whether a repair can be successfully completed in-house and when an outside vendor must be contracted.
  • Coordinates with the Foreman-Mechanic Shop any outside repair bids and monitors the competency and cost efficiency of outside repair work/vendors in accordance with the Procurement and Fiscal Policies and Procedures.
  • Keeps an accurate record of all servicing and repairs.
  • Requires both shop and field work capabilities.
  • Diagnoses vehicles based on observational and mechanical testing as well as information provided by the driver.
  • Performs complete inspections for all tribally owned assets.
  • Performs work in relation to a service writer in order to investigate and/or diagnose mechanical or electrical automotive issues/problems in the absence of the appropriate Supervisor as the equipment or asset is delivered to the Public Works Shop.
  • Performs preventive/predictive maintenance for all Tribal government assets.
  • Performs vehicle performance testing.
  • Prioritizes work and coordinates with the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic. Assists the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic as needed.
  • Logs daily work order hours and inventory usage using eMaintenance system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate person.
Job Requirements
  • Must have one of the following:
    • a. Associates Degree in Automotive Technology from an accredited institution with four (4) years of employment experience; or
    • b. Six (6) years employment experience in diagnosing repairing overhauling and servicing automobiles.
  • Maintenance and repair experience heavy equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline powered equipment preferred.
  • ASE Certification required.
  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours as needed.
  • Must possess a valid state drivers license and insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal and character background check.
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training leadership development and other events.
  • Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of this position adequately and successfully.
Core Competencies Required
  • Adept at multi-tasking have unquestionable integrity with an uncompromising commitment to quality.
  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits/drawings/prints.
  • Must be able to use a variety of repair manuals software programs and be able to navigate software proficiently.
  • Must be knowledgeable in Drivability automotive air brake repairs and Anti-lock brake systems Transmission Diagnosis and front-end and suspension areas.
  • Must possess basic computer skills and understanding of automotive computer related components and modules.
  • Knowledge of automotive and light equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Able to understand and complete written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of and ability to inspect vehicles and maintain Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance preferred.
  • Must be people oriented and relate well to people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to sit stand walk kneel crouch stoop squat and twist for an extended period of time as well as climb lift hold and move objects weighing a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to remain engaged until assignments are completed and overcome obstacles.
  • Takes accountability for performance and results.
  • Open and honest communicator and follows policies and procedures.
Compensation and Benefits
  • The starting pay will depend on factors such as experience level and skillset.
