Description

The Director of Nursing Professional Practice is a professional nurse with broad knowledge and skill in the professional practice standards NYS regulations in nursing emergency management labor contracts and regulations of the Office of Professional Discipline for management of misconduct. This individual is responsible for advancing professional nursing through the organization and oversight of all policies and procedures and standards of care insuring all are within the scope of nursing practice and in accordance with the exemplary professional practice Magnet collaboration with the Magnet Program Director ensures that the care delivery system is integrated within the Professional Practice Model to meet evidence-based practice standards national patient safety goals and regulatory requirements.

Serves as an advisor to the CNO and Nursing Leadership for the promotion and advancement of professional nursing.

Responsible For:

Operational Management of Nursing Professional Practice. Collaborates with MSHS VPs and Clinical Nurse Leaders in assuming responsibility for practice standards and directives for nursing staff nursing care standards and appropriate discipline to promote and influence performance improvement within nursing practice.



Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership

Formulates interprets and implements the Nursing mission vision values policies and standards for nursing care through the implementation of professional nursing practice.

Provides leadership for design and implementation of exemplary professional practice which includes review of policies and procedures and standards of care; the practice of nurses according to full scope within the legal regulations of New York State Magnet standards of Exemplary Professional Practice implementation of care according to a professional practice model and care delivery model and the compliance with Provision of Care Standards as evidenced by The Joint Commission and CMS.

Leads efforts for the promotion of Relationship Centered Care and Modified Primary Nursing.

Leads the development of professional practice criteria for establishing standards of patient care nursing practice in collaboration with nursing quality and magnet criteria.

Leads the committee structure/related activities to support the Professional Practice Model and the Mount Sinai Nursing mission and vision overseeing that structures are in place for shared decision making such as the unit practice councils/professional practice councils Nursing Practice Committee guiding all nursing policies and clinical procedures; collaboratively participates in the Peer Review process and Nursing Documentation committees.

Ensures the development of interdisciplinary team approaches and shared decision making within nursing practice processes to direct improvement activities and evaluates the impact on clinical outcomes RN engagement and the Patient Experience.

Engages in the Daily Management Board process/practice improvement activities to facilitate the utilization of evidence and data related to Nurse Sensitive Indicators and HCAHPS/Press Ganey to drive the delivery of nursing care.

Participates in and assumes leadership roles in Magnet and MSHS Exemplary Professional Practice committees and initiatives providing opportunities for staff participation.

Assumes a leadership role in hospital interdepartmental and medical board committees as well as nursing committees.

Administration

Participates with other executive and departmental leaders in hospital shared decision-making structures and processes.

Performs as a Co-Chairperson in the Nursing Executive Committee and supports the CNO in this work.

Performs as a Co-Chairperson for the MSHS Exemplary Practice Council and supports the CNE in this work.

Provides guidance in union labor contract interpretation within The Nursing Department to interpret any Professional Practice violations and identify subsequent appropriate discipline.

Collaborates with Labor Relations and the Clinical Directors/Nurse Leaders to insure comprehensive guidance for nursing practice for all clinical specialties.

Corroborates with Nursing Education to insure all necessary Practice Alerts and related communication is delivered in a timely manner to support all continuing practice changes and regulatory revisions.

In collaboration with the MSHS Senior Director of Advanced Nursing Practice communicates within the Nursing Executive Structure to ensure all Nursing and Medical Board specific standards support the credentialing of advanced practice clinicians.

Supports the clinical leadership in the development of interdisciplinary and nursing standards policies and procedures relevant to the scope of professional nursing practice.

Participates in strategic planning initiatives and formulates annual goals that support the goals of the hospital and Department of Nursing inclusive of professional practice initiatives.

Represents the Department of Nursing/MSHS on hospital committees and teams.

Management of Human Resources Labor Relations and Professional Practice

Collaboratively ensures that competency assessment and evaluation including participation in select RCAs and CAPS where the delivery of safe ethical (just culture) and evidence-based nursing care is relevant.

Collaboratively ensures that regulatory/labor related and specialty standards or guidelines are incorporated into the implementation of the care delivery system.

Ensures that personnel/labor issues are managed in compliance with contractual agreements and support positive employee-management relationships.

Oversees the reporting of professional misconduct to the NYS Office of Professional Development as necessary and in accordance with legal and labor consensus.

Represents the Department of Nursing leading investigations and providing data/evidence to support disciplinary decisions at arbitrations and grievances.

Collaborates with other nursing and hospital leaders to promote professional development of nursing professionals.

Professional Development

Participates in nursing professional organizations and supports same in clinical nursing leadership.

Participates in public speaking publishing and creating an environment for scholarly professional nursing practice.

Serves as consultant for other healthcare organizations and academic institutions on pertinent nursing and health care issues.

Maintains awareness of current trends and legislation affecting the nursing profession and healthcare delivery.

Treats co-workers patients and families with dignity and respect.

Emergency Management

Nursing liaison to the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Emergency Management providing operational support.

Serves on the Incident Management Team during Command Center activations in a role up to and including the Incident Commander during planned and unplanned events.

In collaboration with Emergency Management and the Interdisciplinary teams represents the Department of Nursing in the revision and or development of Emergency Management policies procedures and equipment management including but not limited to:

Crash Carts

Evacuation sleds

Emergency red bags

Everbridge communication

Assists in and prepares readiness plans for the Nursing Department during scheduled or unplanned disruptions in utilities including but not limited to:

Water

Electricity

Computer or IT services including Pyxis

Medical gases

Maintains all required Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training around Incident Command and the National Incident Management System (NIMS)including but not limited to Independent Study Courses: ISand 800.

Participates in the planning and revisions the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and its supporting components.

Represents the Nursing Department on the Emergency Management Committee.

Involved in ongoing and annual Hazard Vulnerability Assessment Emergency Operations Plan development and in receiving report on and assisting in managing Emergency Management activities under the guidance of the Emergency Manager.

Represents the Nursing Department in exercise requirements established by both CMS the Joint Commission and/or other appropriate regulatory agencies.



Qualifications

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing and a masters degree in nursing or health-related specialty required; doctorate preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive nursing leadership experience demonstrating solid management abilities and academic experience preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in the individuals specialized practice area and management of the nursing core activities of education the teaching and learning process and standards within the workplace setting.
  • Critical thinking and organizational skills are essential.
  • Magnet-related experience highly desirable.

Licensing and Certification Requirements (if applicable)

  • Licensed as a registered nurse Issuing Agency: Department of Health/Office of Professions in the state of New York.
  • Child abuse certification is required
  • Infection control certification is required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Issuing Agency: AHA
  • Certification in Nursing Leadership (NEA-BC CENP) or similar preferred
