Safety Coordinator
Position Summary
The role of a Safety Coordinator is to provide for the safety of school district facilities by using the districts central monitoring systems and responding to calls from building administration citizens or alarm drops at district facilities. The Safety Coordinator will play a key role in assessing safety of the districts school campuses to ensure safety for students staff and community members and serve as a liaison between the District City of Ankeny Police and Fire departments. The Safety Coordinator will office out of one of our predetermined locations and will engage in daily interaction with students staff and families.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice Public Administration Human Services or similar.
- Two years in law enforcement social work or related field such as sociology psychology human services or other relevant work experience.
- Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Institute Training or willingness and ability to obtain within six (6) months of start date
- Environmental Health and Safety background preferred
- Successful experience in a multicultural urban or suburban school district preferred.
- National Incident Management System and Incident Command System certificate(s) preferred.
- OHSA Certification(s) preferred.
- Valid drivers license aligned with the districts required Motor Vehicle Records guidelines at all times
- Previous experience using communication devices video surveillance fire and burglar alarms and various implements for security.
Essential Functions
Daily Security Operations
- Perform duties in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
- Conduct building walkthroughs to ensure safety protocols are being met.
- Respond to calls from building personnel regarding safety and security matters.
- Check all alarms detected by monitoring systems.
- Maintain constant radio communication with building administrators and other security personnel.
Safety & Risk Assessment
- Conduct and facilitate threat security safety and vulnerability assessments.
- Operate the district security cameras and card access systems to protect district facilities.
- Make recommendations to the Safety and Security Specialist on future needs and system improvements.
- Maintain readiness of equipment and identify equipment deficiencies.
Reporting & Communication
- Complete accurate written reports.
- Communicate effectivelyboth orally and in writingwith the Safety & Security Specialist building administration police and fire officials.
Relationship Management & Support
- Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public students and other employees.
- Provide assistance to stakeholders to help resolve conflicts or concerns.
- Bring systemic concerns to the attention of the Safety & Security Specialist.
Collaboration & Conflict Resolution
- Collaborate with building administration and School Resource Officers (SROs) in composing student safety plans.
- Participate in family meetings in response to safety and security-related behavior concerns.
- Operate in a manner that preserves confidentiality maintains neutrality and focuses on informal conflict resolution.
Other Functions
- Occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Collaborate with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators district staff public agencies community members etc.) for implementing and/or maintaining services and programs.
- Facilitate meetings workshops professional development and trainings etc. (e.g. regulatory requirements community or outside agencies interdepartmental needs etc.)
- Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Work well with others maintaining positive and effective communication with district personnel and work well with others on jobs that require more than one person.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff students and visitors.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
- Demonstrate the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to District operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
