Job Description:

A Fire/Hazmat and Safety Coordinator develops coordinates and maintains life safety and fire protection programs to ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations. Also hazardous material storage removal and safety. This role involves overseeing inspections documentation and obtaining MSDS. They work with various departments within the college to create a safe environment. Reports to the Director Facilities Planning and Construction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement life safety and fire protection programs including evacuation plans fire prevention plans and emergency response procedures. Also plans for working with hazardous materials on campus for safe storage and removal along with proper documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with federal state and local regulations maintain records and prepare necessary reports for regulatory agencies. Order yearly certificates for college equipment such as elevators boilers and meet with Health Inspectors coordinate with Fire Marshals or other officials when needed.
  • Conduct regular and yearly inspections to identify hazards assess risks and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Provide training to staff and other relevant personnel on fire safety emergency procedures and other life safety topics.
  • Participate in emergency response activities including drills investigations and incident management.
  • Oversee the maintenance and functionality of college fire and safety protection systems and equipment including fire sprinklers backflows fire extinguishers fire panels hood systems halon systems eye wash and shower stations AED units fire blankets and safety equipment.
  • Assists with updates to the State Emergency Response Committee Manual the Contingency Plan Manual and manuals on HazMat and MSDS.
  • Coordinates with college departments to ensure the maintenance of chemical inventories on all campuses.
  • Maintain the Colleges maintenance request Work Order System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

  • Strong knowledge of fire and life safety codes and regulations.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and training skills.
  • Ability to conduct inspections identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • In-district travel to campuses and Pensacola State College locations.
  • Proficiency in record-keeping documentation and report writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of emergency management principles and practice.
  • Ability to walk to various buildings for inspections and equipment checks.
  • Ability to climb a six-foot ladder.
  • Ability to lift thirty (30) pounds.
  • Operates office equipment (computers copiers fax machines etc.)

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or GED education training or work experience in environmental science or management and the ability to utilize various computer programs including Microsoft Office suite. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.

Pursuant to College policy it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of 435.04(2) Florida Statutes related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in Environmental Management or related field and/or college degree in Environmental Science Environmental Management or another related field.

Annual Salary: $37750.00 ($19.36/hour)
