Responsibilities

Job Summary / Purpose

The paramedic implements individual patient care in the clinic according to established practice protocols policies and procedures. The CNA assists physicians nurse practitioners and physician assistants in clinical duties to ensure patients and families receive the highest quality care and knowledge promoting patient wellness. The paramedic may also transport patients and act as a sitter. The paramedic will practice nursing in accordance with the North Dakota Nurse Practice Act and the limitations of their scope of practice.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  1. Functions within the scope of practice of a Paramedic as defined within North Dakota regulations. This position may take a patient assignment but must be overseen and cosigned by an RN.

  1. Provides patient care and performs patient care procedures:
  1. EKG
  2. Accu checks
  3. CPR
  4. Crutches
  5. Ace bandage application
  6. Splint application
  7. Wound cleansing
  8. Dressing
  9. Immobilization
  10. Medication administration under medical/nursing direction (IM IV oral ASA and Tylenol oral analgesics)
  11. IV insertions IO insertion and EJ insertions
  12. Foley catheterization
  13. Re-assessment of patient condition and status.
  14. Documentation on the EMR (vital signs assessments medications etc.)
  15. Independent transportation to inpatient units
  16. Oxygen administration
  17. Cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation
  18. Spinal stabilization and immobilization
  19. Extrication of patients

  1. Responds to code and trauma activations in the ED and when requested on the hospital campus and assisted with delegation from the primary RN.

  1. Provides patient transportation as requested.

  1. WILL NOT perform triage initial patient assessment provide dismissal instructions administer antibiotics or Thrombolytics and other high-risk medications as determined by the facility.

  1. Consults as needed with supervising nurses and ED physicians regarding patient condition and treatment.

  1. Maintains strict patient confidentiality.

  1. Maintains professional and positive attitude to staff and patients.

  1. Follows policies and procedures of Commonspirit Health.

  1. Maintains a customer-service patient-focused environment.

  1. Participates in QI activities and efforts to improve patient care processes.

  1. Advises providers and nursing leadership regarding any practice issues or patient care concerns.

  1. Attends staff meetings in-services and other departmental meetings as requested.

  1. Provides evidence of on-going continuing education activities and maintains current educational requirements.

  1. Other duties as assigned by leader and organization within the scope of practice of the paramedic.

  1. Able to assume care for patients with acuity levels of 345 under the supervision of a RN after initial assessment of chief complaint is completed.

Qualifications

Required Licensure and Certifications

Must have a valid certificate to function as a EMT-P EMT-Paramedic) in the state of North Dakota

Required Minimum Knowledge Skills and Abilities

BLS or BLS instructor certification is required upon hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer American Safety and Health Institute: CPR PRO must say Professional Level-with AED and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.


ACLS or ACLS instructor certification is required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Advanced Cardiac Life Support American Safety and Health Institute: ACLS American College of Surgeons: ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and American College of Emergency Physician: ACLS


PALS (Pediatric Cardiac Life Support) or PALS instructor certification required within 6 months. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Heart Association: Pediatric Advanced Life Support American Safety and Health Institute: PALS American Academy of Pediatrics: Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) and American Academy of Pediatrics/American College of Emergency Physicians: APLS.
