Job Description

Supervisor: Program Manager

Job Classification: Part-time at $28.00 per hour

Contract Length: July 1st June 30th (hours vary depending on position)

Job Summary:

Region Five Adult Education is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Adult Education ABE English Language Instructor. This position will be responsible for teaching two times per week in the morning for three hours. The Adult Education ABE Instructor is responsible for classroom instruction and evaluating students progress in attaining goals and objectives. Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site in the region. The candidate will possess the ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skill ranges vary. Possess working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction communicate via e-mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner. Additionally this position will report to the Regional Program Manager.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement effective lesson plans tailored for adult learners with varying proficiency and educational backgrounds.
  • Use a variety of teaching materials including textbooks multimedia and digital tools to support reading writing listening speaking and pronunciation skills.
  • Assess student proficiency using appropriate tools (e.g. ESL-level assessments) evaluate ongoing progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate student records attendance assessment results demographicsand comply with reporting standards.
  • Teach in various settings: one-on-one small-group and large-group formats.
  • Manage learner behavior and create a positive inclusive classroom environment that supports adult learning principles.
  • Work effectively with culturally linguistically and socioeconomically diverse adult learners.
  • Build strong rapport and support students.
  • Coordinate with adult education colleagues literacy specialists and program administrator.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) to stay current on best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a bachelors degree in a related field and have prior experience teaching basic academic skills to adult learners in an open-entry multi-level classroom.

  • Outstanding personal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Expert skills for oral and written communication.
  • Ability to adapt instructional material to fit all learning styles.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional methods for adult learners.
  • Knowledge of community needs within the Service Delivery Area.
  • The ability to keep accurate records and incorporate current technology into the classroom environment.
  • Communicate and work with a diverse population of individuals and groups.
  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships.

Additional Qualifications

Bachelors degree and experience in teaching core skills and specific subject matter required.

  • Instructional Skills: Curriculum design assessment scaffolding pacing.
  • Relational Skills: Cultural competence motivation empathy.
  • Administrative Skills: Data management compliance scheduling.
  • Language-Specific Knowledge: ESL pedagogy adult language acquisition grammar & vocabulary instruction.

Physical Demands

Work is typically performed in a classroom while standing or walking in various settings. The employee occasionally lifts or moves objects to a light to medium weight.
