About the role:

The Lead Animal Attendant is responsible for assisting the Animal Attendant Team Leaders in the coordination and Management of day-to-day animal care activities such as feeding cleaning and enrichment. The Lead Animal Attendant acts as second-in-charge to the Team Leaders and in addition to regular animal care duties will assist with rostering troubleshoot any issues that arise oversee the quality of work and suggest changes to improve standards of care and cleanliness.

The role will also provide training guidance and general feedback to Animal Attendants and volunteers across all areas of the role and will foster exceptional working relationships with other LDH departments (e.g. Pathways Veterinary Services). As a senior member of the Animal Attendant Team the role will be expected to act as a role model both behaviourally and in regards to standard of work performed and will champion LDHs values (compassion respect ethical teamwork and accountability) at all times.

In addition to your leadership duties other duties include:

  • General Animal Attendant responsibilities such as cleaning feeding enriching our animals laundry etc.
  • Reporting any changes in health or behaviour and in some cases to administer medication to our animals
  • Moving animals to different locations across the shelter
  • Transporting animals between our shelter and council partners
  • Assisting members of the public with lost and found inquiries
  • Liaising with the public and council officers
  • Maintaining the shelter including laundry animal pens and vehicles
  • Keeping up-to-date records of all impounded animals
  • Recording food stock levels.

The successful applicant will have:

  • Experience working with animals in a professional capacity
  • A recognised animal-related qualification/s (desired)
  • Great communication and people-management skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • A current drivers licence
  • Sound emotional maturity and ethics regarding animals and their welfare
  • The ability to display initiative and motivation
  • A reasonable level of fitness and the ability and motivation to work in a physically demandingrole.
