Under the direction of the physician manager or designee performs a variety of direct ophthalmic patient care diagnostic testing and works in conjunction with others on the ophthalmic healthcare team.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Prepares patient for ophthalmological examination taking pertinent ocular and medical history.
2. Performs various ophthalmic duties including but not inclusive to visual acuity color vision manual lensometry pupil testing axial length estimation of anterior chamber angle tonometry auto refraction ocular ultrasonography and ophthalmic photography visual fields automated keratometry corneal topography and external photography.
3. Performs other duties required to assist in and ensure delivery of complete ophthalmic care in taking care of patients including the instillation of diagnostic ophthalmic drops and ointments per standing MD orders.
4. Reviews with the patient use of ocular dressings shields ocular medications laser treatment and minor surgical procedures.
5. Insures that equipment is in proper working order for patient safety and notifies appropriate personnel when a problem is identified.
6. Maintains adequate stock of medical/ophthalmic supplies in the exam and test rooms.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required within one year from date of hire as a condition of employment.
2. Certified in BLS is required; or must become certified within 6 months of date of hire.
3. Must maintain current Basic Life Support (BLSS) certification every two years.
Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
