Job Duties

The Judicial Inquiry and Review Commission of Virginia seeks applicants for the position of Commission Counsel. The successful applicant will begin work for the Commission on January 1 2026. The Commission is an independent judicial branch agency composed of seven members elected by the General Assembly.

Counsels primary duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Counseling judges on compliance with the Canons of Judicial Conduct;
  • Receiving reviewing and investigating complaints of judicial misconduct;
  • Coordinating investigation of claims of judicial misconduct;
  • Preparing for coordinating and attending monthly meetings of the Commission;
  • Carrying out and coordinating the imposition of discipline of judges found to have violated the Canons of Judicial Conduct;
  • Drafting appropriate pleadings for the Supreme Court of Virginia relating to disciplinary actions;
  • Coordinating as appropriate with other state entities including the Office of Executive Secretary for the Supreme Court of Virginia Governors Office the Virginia Legislature and the Virginia State Bar;
  • Handling all forms of communication between the Commission and the public the media the courts and other state and national judicial conduct organizations;
  • Preparing and monitoring the budget for the Commission;
  • Assisting and conferring with the Office of Executive Secretary for the Supreme Court of Virginia and with appropriate General Assembly committees concerning budgetary and other administrative matters;
  • Presenting educational presentations on judicial ethics and the work of the Commission at judicial seminars and other appropriate functions;
  • Managing the office equipment operations accounts payable and personnel etc. of the Commission.

Minimum Qualifications

Counsel serves at the pleasure of the Commission and must be a member in good standing with the Virginia State Bar which at least 10 years experience as an active trial lawyer in both civil and criminal matters. Counsel must have strong administrative and interpersonal skills and be capable of dealing professionally with the bench bar legislature and public.
