Join Us as an Instrument Technician Team Lead

Ann Arbor MI Full-Time In-Office

Do you have a passion for string instruments and the craftsmanship that brings them to life Are you ready to put your leadership skills to work by mentoring others and guiding a team to success At Shar Music we are seeking an experienced and dedicated Instrument Technician Team Lead to oversee repair and maintenance operations provide guidance to a talented team of technicians and ensure the highest standards of quality for every instrument that passes through our workshop.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

As an Instrument Technician Team Lead you will:

  • Adjust bridges and nuts of instruments to obtain specified string tensions and heights.

  • Adjust string tensions to tune instruments using hand tools and electronic tuning devices.

  • Set adjust and modify sound posts; perform miscellaneous peg and nut repairs; maintain tools; and ensure proper bench maintenance and upkeep.

  • Perform all levels of advanced repairs including neck bending fingerboard work peg replacement peg box clearance bridge replacement bridge carving restoration work and bow repairs along with other production-related or specialized tasks.

  • Replace violin viola cello and bass bridges and reassemble instruments following repair.

  • Ensure that all instruments meet Shar Musics high standards of quality and craftsmanship.

  • Maintain a clean safe and organized workspace while adhering to performance metrics for output and accuracy.

  • Communicate effectively with team members supervisors customers and vendors to ensure smooth operations and build positive relationships.

  • Provide hands-on training guidance and mentorship to less experienced technicians supporting their skill development and professional growth.

  • Assign and prioritize daily tasks to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of repairs.

  • Monitor quality control by inspecting team members work and providing constructive feedback to maintain consistent standards.

  • Foster a positive collaborative and solutions-focused environment within the technician team.

  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement strategies to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the technician team when questions or challenges arise.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds as needed.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; lutherie school completion or 3 years equivalent experience strongly preferred.

  • Proven experience in advanced string instrument repair.

  • Strong leadership communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and guide peers.

  • Experience with string instrument playing is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to concentrate for extended periods and complete high-precision tasks.
