CAREER OPPORTUNITY

DISTRICT PRINCIPAL - INDIGENOUS EDUCATION & EQUITY

The New Westminster School District is seeking a dynamic and collaborative educational leader to join our team as District Principal Indigenous Education and Equity effective immediately. Report to the Associate Superintendent this role is central to advancing our Districts commitment to Indigenous Education and Equity.

The successful candidate will lead and support a wide range of initiatives aligned with the Districts Strategic Plan including the implementation of Bill 40 and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) collaboration with the Districts SOGI lead and the advancement of our Diversity Equity Inclusion and Anti-Racism (DEIA) Framework.

This role requires a visionary leader who can foster meaningful relationships with students staff families and community partners to ensure inclusive culturally responsive and equitable learning environments for all.

Serving the community of New Westminster the New Westminster School District provides high quality educational programs to nearly 8000 students in a variety of learning environments. Located in the geographic centre of Metro Vancouver New Westminster is a compact and growing urban centre with all the benefits of both city and small-town life and ready access to a rich array of recreational and cultural pursuits high quality public services and the neighborly feel of a small community. The total population is approximately 82000 and expected to grow to 104 000 by 2041. District schools are in general fully subscribed and a steady increase in student enrolment is expected over the next ten years. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION

  • Provide leadership and supervision to the Indigenous Education Department and District SOGI Lead
  • Build strong relationships with local Indigenous Nations and racialized communities to ensure authentic engagement and collaboration
  • Support educators in embedding Indigenous Knowledge and perspectives across the curriculum
  • Analyze student achievement data and contribute to targeted action plans to improve outcomes for priority learners
  • Oversee the districts 1701 data collection and reporting processes
  • Facilitate opportunities to gather and respond to student voice
  • Lead the implementation of the District DEIA Framework ensuring alignment with school and district goals
  • Develop and support strategies and curriculum that reflect diverse voices experiences and cultures
  • Guide the Equity Scan process and lead the development of responsive action plans
  • Support and coordinate the work of the District Indigenous Education Council
  • Represent the district on the Provincial K-12 Anti-Racism Committee
  • Actively participate in the District SOGI and Accessibility Committees and provide regular updates to the Board of Education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION

The successful applicant will meet the eligibility requirements of the B.C. School Act and will have:

  • Valid BC Teachers Certificate
  • Master of Education preferably in a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Experience leading initiatives focused on racial equity anti-discrimination and inclusive practices
  • Demonstrated understanding of cultural traditions history and contemporary issues experience by various Indigenous peoples in Canada
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an integral school-based team
  • Related work experience preferably within a complex unionized environment
