Reporting directly to a Correctional Sergeant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position provides first line supervision to offenders andwill be working on the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) managing offenders with special needs. Job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:


  1. Ensuring the care custody and control of offenders.

  2. Touring assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time.

  3. Observing offenders activity in person and on closed circuit monitors and monitoring and regulating offenders and staff movement.

  4. Identifying offenders who have behavioral medical or other issues so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.

  5. Performing general security duties to prevent escape disorder rule infractions and harm to offenders visitors and staff.

  6. Searching offenders visitors cells and other areas for weapons and contraband.

  7. Maintaining and recording offender counts cell assignments and other pertinent information.

  8. Escorting offenders within and outside the Institution using and maintaining keys and other equipment and supervising offender work details.

  9. Specific duties vary by post assignment and shift assignments will be made based on operational need.




Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies



Management Preferences

  1. One (1) year experience working with special populations such as Mental Ill or Developmentally Disabled offenders.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements




High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificateAND two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum Education and Experience for a Trainee Appointment: High School or General Educational Development (GED) certificate or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

The Division of Institutionsis one of the divisions in DAC andemploys a variety of staff operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels which include minimum medium and close.
