Reporting directly to a Correctional Sergeant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position provides first line supervision to offenders andwill be working on the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) managing offenders with special needs. Job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Ensuring the care custody and control of offenders.
Touring assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs and standing for long periods of time.
Observing offenders activity in person and on closed circuit monitors and monitoring and regulating offenders and staff movement.
Identifying offenders who have behavioral medical or other issues so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.
Performing general security duties to prevent escape disorder rule infractions and harm to offenders visitors and staff.
Searching offenders visitors cells and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Maintaining and recording offender counts cell assignments and other pertinent information.
Escorting offenders within and outside the Institution using and maintaining keys and other equipment and supervising offender work details.
Specific duties vary by post assignment and shift assignments will be made based on operational need.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is CR 07(Salary Range:$41558 - $54078). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.About Central Prison:Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.
While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services. Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Effective July 1 2025 candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the Minimum Education and Experience listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. The Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs) listed here in this section are now to be used as Management Preferencesand be used to screen for the MOST QUALIFIED pool of applicants.Management Preferences
One (1) year experience working with special populations such as Mental Ill or Developmentally Disabled offenders.
