Job Description:
The Academic Year Tutor is directly responsible to the Upward Bound and Open Doors Academic Advisors and is a part-time temporary employee. Tutors are paid on an hourly basis to provide academic assistance to middle and high school-age participants to help them develop the academic and motivational skills needed to become self-confident and independent learners. Tutors play key roles in the entire process and their competency reliability and integrity are essential to the success of both programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Tutors must be available to work Monday through Thursday evenings from 3pm-7 pm all days Lawton Public Schools are in session and on designated Saturdays from 9am-1pm.
Education:
Demonstrated success in a post-secondary educational institution
Professional Skills and Knowledge:
Academic expertise in the subject of Math Science English or other high school core curriculum
Experience with and knowledge of high school students
Excellent oral communication skills
Ability to accurately complete tutoring and timesheet records
Personal Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with students parents and program staff
Excellent organizational and time management skills
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Tutor and assist students in academic subject areas.
Establish rapport with students assigned as tutees.
Arrive at all tutoring sessions promptly prepared and appropriately dressed.
Report to and keep UB and OD supervisors advised of both the perceived and real needs of students.
Identify students problem areas and confer with program staff.
Attend all scheduled meetings training sessions and individual meetings with the program staff.
Abstain from use of alcohol/tobacco products while on duty or around students.
Leave absences must be approved in advance by program staff.
Term of employment will be yearly with satisfactory evaluation.
Prepare time sheets.
Report any signs or indications of abuse to the program staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior experience with or participation in TRiO programs
Preference is given to those who have succeeded in overcoming a disadvantaged background similar to program participants
SALARY RANGE:
13.50/hr.
