This role supports NOAA Fisheries web communications by auditing revising and managing online content in alignment with NOAAs policies and accessibility standards for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC)
Join @Orchard in strengthening NOAAs digital presence through accessible high-impact science communication. This role supports the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) within the Operations Management and Information (OMI) Divisions Science Research Directorate (SRD) helping to ensure that digital content meets NOAA Fisheries standards for usability clarity and accessibility.
As the Website Developer and 508-Compliance Specialist you will audit migrate and enhance NEFSCs web-based materials in alignment with NOAA business rules and federal accessibility this role youll serve as a primary resource for staff needing support with Section 508 compliance helping translate complex scientific content into inclusive web-ready materials. Your work will directly support public transparency scientific literacy and internal efficiency ensuring NEFSCs digital content is both effective and equitable.
This is a high-impact role ideal for someone with strong technical skills a user-first mindset and deep knowledge of Section 508 compliance. Experience with Drupal NOAA content standards and digital accessibility best practices is required. Remote or hybrid work may be approved subject to equipment and system access.
Key Responsibilities
Maintaining NEFSC content dashboards that reflect ongoing requirements for content update revisions development and posting.
Working with NEFSC organizational units to audit select and prioritize their content.
Reformatting reorganizing and rewriting existing content as needed according to NOAA Fisheries business rules and policies.
Serving as an author and administrator for NEFSC content in the NOAA Fisheries ContentManagement System.
Providing quality assurance for newly submitted web content to ensure compliance with NOAA Fisheries business rules and policies and Section 508 accessibility standards.
Providing Help Desk responses and training for staff developing 508-compliant documents graphics and presentations.
Converting existing noncompliant materials into 508-compliant form meeting NOAA standards for web-based materials and materials entered into the NOAA Library Institutional Repository as directed by the communications chief.
Assisting the Information Technology Division Change Control Board with developing 508 requirements to be met by in-house application developers.
Providing basic training for developers so they can meet these requirements and maintaining a resource list of tools existing applications and test suites for this purpose.
Reviewing 508 compliance for apps submitted to the Change Board for approval until the ITD staff are competent to do this themselves.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
.A degree in computer science or a related field and 7 yrs experience or 10 years of experience in a related field. Drupal experience required.
Ability to use shared workflow dashboards that reflect our progress on identifying and moving content from one platform to the other.
Experience administering content for a Drupal-based content management system
Ability to work with NEFSC organizational units to develop and implement content migration plans.
Experience reformatting reorganizing and rewriting existing content for a different platform with different rules and policies.
Ability to learn and use NOAA Fisheries website business rules and policies.
Comprehensive knowledge of Section 508 accessibility requirements for video audio documents and other file types commonly used in web-based content.
Experience bringing complex scientific or technical documents into 508 compliance. Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe files preferred.
Experience executing quality assurance for web content to ensure compliance with institutional and 508 standards.
Experience training others to develop 508-compliant documents graphics and presentations.
Ability to work with individuals focused on web content transition and 508 compliance who are not familiar with or skilled in meeting these requirements.
