The City of Penticton is looking to fill the position of Facilities Maintenance 1 (Certified) in our Facilities Department. The Facilities Department is responsible for the planning design construction operations and maintenance of over 30 City-owned buildings. This department ensures these buildings operate at optimum efficiency to enable other City departments and lessees to effectively deliver services and programs to the community.
Reporting to the Recreational Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Facilities Maintenance 1 (Certified) participates in the daily maintenance of City Buildings & related infrastructure. The Facilities Maintenance 1 (Certified) is responsible for performing routine building maintenance tasks general janitorial room setups resurfacing and maintaining arena ice and other tasks as assigned. This position potentially involves year-round inside and outside work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Completes duties within Facilities Maintenance I - Uncertified as required.
- Resurfaces and maintains arena ice using Zamboni and edger as required.
- Sets up tables chairs Community Centre and meeting rooms according to general plans and modifies same as required in accordance with requests from users of facility.
- Checks and cleans washrooms gym change rooms fitness room multi purposed rooms pool decks theatre dressing rooms stands and lobbies restock & replenishing sanitary & janitorial supplies as required.
- Washes and waxes floors as required vacuums carpets dusts curtains and drapes etc. as required.
- Makes minor building repairs replacing light bulbs unplugging toilets and sinks installing new nets repairing torn nets and assists Building Operators with major facilities maintenance and renovations as well as performing Annual shutdown duties.
- Assists Refrigeration Technician with plant repairs and overhauls.
- Monitors the operation of the arena refrigeration plant and records readings and monitors the operation of pools and makes minor adjustments to pool chemistry as required.
- Lays out and applies lines faceoff circles and surface whitening to arena ice at the commencement of the season and as required throughout the season.
- Performs scraper blade & propane bottle changes on Zamboni as well as washing & waxing the unit.
- Requests the replacement of janitorial supplies from the Supervisor using the form provided as required.
- Supervises the public enforcing rules and regulations as well as Fire Department occupancy regulations and Fire Evacuation procedures maintaining order and locking premises as required.
- Shovels snow from outside entrances and spreads salt as required. Removes leaves from outside entrances
- Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge Abilities & Skills:
- Necessary knowledge of ice resurfacing.
- Necessary knowledge of multi-purpose space and gym set up and changeovers.
- Necessary knowledge of arena refrigeration plant operation and pool operation & cleaning.
- The ability to perform minor building and equipment maintenance tasks.
- The ability to exercise courtesy and diplomacy in exchange of routine information with other city employees and members of the public.
- Necessary knowledge of janitorial practices including safe and proper handling of waxes cleaners and other chemicals used.
- Ability to utilize and navigate digital technology for work order management through the computerized maintenance management system.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team depending on the work being undertaken.
- High degree of customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
- High degree of time management and organizational skills.
Education Training & Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12.
- Refrigerator Operators (RO) Certificate or 4th Class Power Engineer (preferred) as per the Technical Safety BC.
- Ability to work co-operatively or independently problem-solve and exercise independence of judgment.
- Completion of WHMIS.
- Pools Ops 1 & 2 considered an asset.
- Valid B.C. Drivers Licence Minimum Class 5.
