Job Responsibilities
Under general supervision provides professional nursing care in accordance with nurse protocols policies and/or procedures. Focuses on the prevention of illness injury or disability the promotion of health and maintenance of the health of populations. Cares for population with special needs during disasters/emergencies and biological and chemical protocols.
Works under protocols to provide direct care and case management and educates the public on health practices that promote health and prevent disease. Some services may be provided in various settings including clinics homes or in the community as deemed appropriate.
Provides direct patient care services as an expanded role nurse.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and exercises good judgment in the execution of patient care protocols.
- Orders appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments and administers medications and vaccines in accordance with protocol.
- Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic testing and interprets the results to direct treatment.
- Provides patient education and makes appropriate referrals.
- Facilitates patient decision making by providing health education counseling and tools
- Provides thorough documentation of medical assessment diagnosis treatment referrals education and consultations in the electronic medical record system.
- Performs womens wellness services contraceptive counseling and contraceptives according to protocol.
- Is knowledgeable about and enrolls patients in the breast and cervical cancer program (BCCP).
- Provides assessment screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases according to protocol.
- Administers tuberculosis testing interprets results and works with the TB Program Coordinator to support follow-up and treatment.
- Provides child health vision screening and supports the provision of other primary care services on an as needed.
- Performs onsite waived lab testing offered by the HD performs wet preps and participates in lab QA/QI.
- Is knowledgeable about and provides referrals to programs and services available within the Department of Public Health and other agencies to eligible infants children and adults.
- Consults with and refer patients to physicians and other care providers as indicated.
Participates in community outreach and health promotion events.
- Promote public health in the community through education about resources and programs.
Participates in QA/QI activities including chart review strategic planning initiation of new programs and services protocol development and other working groups as assigned.
- Participates in meetings and contributes to District program goals and objectives as needed.
- Participates in peer review according to protocol requirements.
Oversees and participates in emergency preparedness efforts in partnership with District and local agencies and stakeholders.
- Participates in emergency preparedness planning and response activities.
Completes initial and annual training requirements and participates in ongoing education including emergency preparedness HIPAA and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
- Completes all initial and annual training to practice under nurse protocol.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- May included but not limited to: inventory management monthly reports planning and/or implementing community outreach activities etc.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of nursing experience and completion of a PHN course within one year of hire and current Georgia Registered Professional Nurse license and CPR certification; or one (1) year of experience at the lowerlevel PH Registered Nurse 1 (HCP190) or position equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in nursing. Knowledge of Ga DPH Nurse protocols.

DPH accepts educational credentials recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE). DPH will contact educational institutions to verify degree diploma licensure etc.
