Job Description

Purpose

Essential Functions

Minimum Requirements

1. Bachelors degree in fire protection engineering or aclosely related field from an accredited college or university.

2. Three years of experience in fire protection systemsbuilding inspection or a closely related field working with the InternationalBuilding Code (IBC) the International Fire Code and the National FireProtection Association experience includes the designreview installation or inspection of fire protection and life safety systemsalong with the administration and enforcement of applicable codes.

3. Possession of the following certifications as a condition ofpassing the one-year probationary period and maintained throughout employment:
  • State of Wisconsin (DSPS) Commercial Building Inspector AND;
  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner AND;
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist or Certified Fire Plans Examiner.
4. Possession of the following certifications issued by theNational Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) as acondition of passing the one-year probationary period and maintained throughoutemployment:
  • Water-Based Systems Layout-Level I AND;
  • Fire Alarm Systems-Level I
    5. Valid drivers license at time of appointment and throughoutemployment.

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.

    • Verbal communication skills including the ability to convey the results of a fire protection risk assessment to customers including designers architects engineers property owners and tenants.
    • Skill in written communication to write reports notes and policies and procedures.
    • Ability to provide training to staff in fire protection and fire alarm systems hazardous and combustible materials storage and processes.
    • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships and collaborate with a multi-cultural multi-disciplinary staff the public various City of Milwaukee Officials and other agencies.
    • Customer service knowledge and skills to serve the public positively.
    • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and remain calm when working with people who are upset.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with others whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.

    Current Salary

    The current salary range (Pay Range 7KN) is $87514-$112409annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $90139-$115781 annually. Appointment above the minimum ispossible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subjectto approval.

    THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job-related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of educationexperience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written orperformance test a structured interview or other assessment methods. TheDepartment of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the mostqualified candidates to structured interviews and performance interviews may include written exercises. Selection processcomponent weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
