Purpose
The Fire Protection Engineer 3 conducts plan reviews ofalarm detection and other fire protection systems in commercial industrialand residential buildings.
Essential Functions
- Review shop drawings for all fire alarm and other fire protection installations for compliance with code requirements. Review and process plans and permits.
- Provide technical advice to design professionals by performing a risk analysis of buildings and by providing guidance on how adaptive reuse of an existing building can be achieved with appropriate use of fire prevention techniques.
- Evaluate alternate means and methods for achieving code compliance.
- Evaluate the storage handling and use of flammable and combustible materials and hazardous material compliance with fire codes standards and other regulations.
- Provide training and guidance to DNS staff in the areas of fire protection fire alarm systems and the storage and processing of hazardous materials.
- Identify improvements and changes needed in ordinances policies and code provisions and draft suggested changes for review.
- Assist members of the public and City Officials with inquiries about fire detection and protection codes standards and DNS processes related to fire detection and protection requirements plan review permitting and inspection.

Minimum Requirements
- State of Wisconsin (DSPS) Commercial Building Inspector AND;
- International Code Council (ICC) Fire Plans Examiner AND;
- National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist or Certified Fire Plans Examiner.
- Water-Based Systems Layout-Level I AND;
- Fire Alarm Systems-Level I
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working with the State of Wisconsin (DSPS) Commercial Building Code.
Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics
TECHNICAL
- Knowledge of the International Code Councils International Fire Code and the referenced National Fire Protection Association standards relating to fire protection and alarm systems.
- Knowledge of or ability to learn the current State of Wisconsin Commercial Building Code.
- Ability to conduct a risk analysis to evaluate existing buildings for required fire protection and life safety systems.
- Knowledge of and ability to work with computer applications including database spreadsheet word processing presentation and electronic plan review software to conduct plan review maintain records prepare correspondence and create reports and presentations. Ability to use the Land Management System (LMS) to enter and retrieve information as well as conduct research.
- Ability to review interpret and evaluate construction documents for code compliance.
- Ability to perform all work safely.
- Knowledge of mathematics and ability to perform calculations and make precise measurements.
COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL
- Verbal communication skills including the ability to convey the results of a fire protection risk assessment to customers including designers architects engineers property owners and tenants.
- Skill in written communication to write reports notes and policies and procedures.
- Ability to provide training to staff in fire protection and fire alarm systems hazardous and combustible materials storage and processes.
- Ability to build and maintain good working relationships and collaborate with a multi-cultural multi-disciplinary staff the public various City of Milwaukee Officials and other agencies.
- Customer service knowledge and skills to serve the public positively.
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and remain calm when working with people who are upset.
- Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with others whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.

Current Salary
The current salary range (Pay Range 7KN) is $87514-$112409annually and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukeeresidents is $90139-$115781 annually. Appointment above the minimum ispossible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subjectto approval.
