Job Title:
Deep Space Electro-Optical Observations Engineer Reports to: Principal Scientist
FLSA Status: Full-Time (Exempt) Department: Space Science
Position Objective:
  • Applied Optimization is an engineering R&D firm performing day and night observations of the sky in the visible and infrared wavelengths along with archiving processing and analyzing the collected data for on-site and remote observations which involves the development testing and implementation of custom systems
  • This is a challenging position with direct hands-on responsibility for operating and maintaining novel optical systems telescopes astronomical instrumentation lasers and observatory monitoring equipment such as a weather stations particle counters and star charts
  • Successful candidate must be a meticulous detail-oriented individual who brings consistent quality and reliability to the collection and archiving of experimental results
  • This position is a key component of an interdisciplinary research and development team that collects data to analyze and implement next generation scientific algorithms in the area of space science and atmospheric research
Essential Functions:
  • Operates and maintains the telescopes and instrumentation including computer systems
  • Understand implement and utilize optical equipment for laser and imaging systems
  • Assist in or perform optical design modeling and simulation for optical systems and custom optical devices at small and large scales
  • Conducts experiment planning and data collection in laboratory and real-world settings
  • Conducts data reduction and processing
  • Coordinates trains or works with a small team of aircraft spotters laser and telescope operators and data processors
  • Conducts effective and efficient customer relations that include regular meetings status updates and technical reports
  • Maintains and operates a laser system and other optical elements/devices for research
  • Provides general support services for optical and mechanical equipment as required
  • Assist in modeling and simulation for photonic crystals metamaterials and other research-level optical systems
  • Ensure accuracy and follow documentation procedures for all work; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly report of work
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or higher preferably related to the field of electro-optics physics or astronomy with a superior academic record
  • Knowledge of basic scientific principles and problem-solving skills normally obtained through a curriculum for a Bachelors degree
  • Interest in and possess a basic/amateur knowledge of astronomy
  • Ability to work well independently and without close supervision
  • Ability to consult with senior scientists to maximize the scientific results of the experiments
  • Ability to operate scientific instrumentation and collect calibrate and record data
  • Ability to perform day and nighttime observations throughout all four seasons as required
  • Perform mechanical thermal and optical analysis of telescopes and other optical systems for space and mechanical engineering applications
  • Physically capable of working different shifts and performing tasks in and around observatories relating to both hardware and software elements
  • Ability to travel to customer sites for technical support
  • Ability to analyze data and compile meaningful results into presentations and reports
  • Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills
  • Effective organizing planning debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements
  • Ability to execute instructions and communication in written oral and diagram form
  • Demonstrated strong writing fact-gathering and analytical skills
  • Basic computer and software skills including but not necessarily limited to Microsoft Office products (e.g. Outlook Word and Power Point)
  • Write technical reports and proposals as required by the project
Preferred Qualifications:
  • College cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of 3.5 or higher
  • Minor or dual degree in physics astronomy optics computer science or computer engineering
  • Knowledge of computers and digital recording of sensor data such as CCDs
  • Aptitude in electronics and computers
  • Familiarity with Windows OS and Linux OS (Ubuntu)
  • Experience in CAD modeling using SolidWorks and optical design in Zemax
  • Experience in EM simulation tools such as open-source and commercial solutions for FDTD and FEM modeling and simulation
  • Aptitude with a programming language preferably Python C C# and/or SQL
  • Optics laboratory experience
  • Prior experience in astronomy telescopes or operation of electro-optical systems
  • Familiarity with Government property accountability procedures
Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizen
  • May be required to obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance

  • In-office attendance is required; remote work is not offered at this time
