The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Central Oklahoma invites applications for a Temporary Visiting Assistant Professor of Scenic Design to instruct courses in: computer drafting for theatre scenic painting scenic design stagecraft and other generalized theatre courses.
Other duties include mentorship of student designers recruiting and retaining students.
The successful candidate will join our current Design and Technology faculty members and support staff. We are looking for a collaborative educator who is committed to teaching and mentoring students and working collegially within the Department of Theatre Arts and the College of Fine Arts and Design.
Department Specific Essential Job Functions:Teaches advises and mentors students evaluates student performance and maintains department and student records in accordance with university policies and to the educational philosophy of the in a collaborative manner with colleagues and professional in university meetings that relate specifically to on department college and university committees as departmental reports as requested.
The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced courses in scenic design scene painting computer drafting for theatre stagecraft and other generalized theatre arts courses. Additional duties will include mentorship of student designers in executing scenic designs for the theatre musical theatre opera and dance season and participation in shared governance of the Department of Theatre Arts.
Qualifications / Experience:An earned M.F.A. Technical Theatre with a focus on set design awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized of three years of university-level teaching experience or more years of professional experience preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Applicants must have prior knowledge and experience with the best practices in scenic design for the theatre. The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in instruction of these systems at the college level along with practical application of the associated skill sets in a professional production environment. Additional experience in shop supervision is strongly desired. Applicants must also have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office systems possess strongcommunication and leadership skills and manage multiple tasks both efficiently and effectively under deadlines.
UCO expects its faculty to be accessible to students beyond the classroom hours. Intellectual interactions with students are part of the university culture. Faculty members in the performing arts frequently have obligations in the evening and on weekends.
Physical Demands: Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders. They will perform repetitive movement of hands and fingers including both typing and writing; stand and sit for long periods of time; walk stoop kneel or crouch on occasion; and reach out with arms and hands. They must be able to visually identify observe and assess as well as both speak and hear.
Work Environment: The noise level in the classroom environment is typically minimal and controlled. Noise levels in the shop or production environment may range from minimal to loud. Personal protective equipment in the shop environment is provided including eye ear and mouth protection.
