Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Drainage Operations Senior Civil Engineer (Civil Engineer Sr.) to take a leading role in managing and improving the performance of the citys drainage infrastructure.

As a key technical expert youll help ensure SPUs drainage systems operate safely and efficiently reducing flooding risks improving water quality and keeping us in compliance with regulatory requirements. In this role youll provide critical oversight of drainage system performance develop proactive maintenance strategies and support crews in the field to deliver projects on time and to standard. Your leadership will help SPU minimize risk avoid costly emergencies and keep our citys stormwater systems working seamlessly.

About Seattle Public Utilities:Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is a community-centered utility that delivers vital services to Seattle residents and businesses including drinking water drainage and wastewater and garbage/recycling/compost. SPU also provides drinking water for 1.5 million customers in the region. SPUs work includes system maintenance and improvements and keeping Seattle clean. Over 1400 SPU employees work with our community to provide affordable and equitable stewardship of our water and waste resources for future generations.

Job Responsibilities

Qualifications

Education:Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology

Experience: Five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience

Experience/Education Equivalency: In lieu of a Bachelors Degree in an accredited program four (4) additional years of civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted. There is no equivalency for the PE license.

Desired Experience:
  • Demonstrated experience implementing maintenance projects in compliance with regulatory requirements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and other regulatory agencies and stakeholders
  • Technical expertise in open channel systems water quality structures detention facilities and surface water ponds
  • Proven ability to apply sound engineering judgment under pressure to develop recommendations and make real-time decisions
  • Experience leading and supporting field crews including real-time problem-solving during active rehabilitation and maintenance operations
  • Skilled in collaborating with a diverse team of field and office personnel

License Certification and Other Requirements:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
  • Current Washington State drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • This position is expected to work in the office or field 3-5 days per week
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather traffic hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds
  • May be required to stand bend or walk for extended periods of time
  • May be required to work nights evenings weekends and/or holidays

Additional Information

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.Effective January 2025 City employees have the option to work remotely two days a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is:$72.38 - $84.28 Hourly
