This position serves as the Northeast Senior Wildlife Biologist for the Terrestrial Branch Game Management Team. The position reports to the Terrestrial Branch Deputy Assistant Director for Game Management. This positions work unit exists to gather evaluate and summarize data on terrestrial wildlife resources and to develop and participate in the implementation of recommendations consistent with CPWs Strategic Plan all CPW guidance documents and direction provided by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission for the wise stewardship of wildlife populations. This work unit has a role in the evaluation and creation of policy and regulations for the management of wildlife in Colorado and ensures that management complies with statutes and administrative directives. The work unit is also involved in the development and implementation of various wildlife plans and agreements. These tasks are accomplished through collaboration and the formation of partnerships with other diverse interests both within and outside CPW.

Description of Job

Plans develops modifies and implements operational plans for terrestrial wildlife stewardship in the designated Region. Leads and supervises wildlife biologists to prioritize and achieve goals and activities of the Unit Terrestrial Branch CPW Operational Plan CPW Strategic Plan and other Division goals. Supervises annual and long-term planning development and implementation of wildlife management and conservation plans. Cooperatively develops annual performance objectives and work plans with staff monitors staff performance regularly provides coaching and feedback and conducts team member performance evaluations. Ensures organized documentation of human resources and performance issues creates performance improvement plans and directs corrective actions. Plans professional development opportunities for staff. Applies leadership training and skills to support and direct their team(s).

Program and Budget Administration
Oversees all Unit administration needs. This includes providing guidance review approval and denial of purchases timecards travel requests reimbursements contracts and agreements procurement process hiring process data sharing agreements project proposals regulatory issue papers and wildlife management and conservation plans among other program and administrative products and processes. Provides coaching on and ensures staff compliance with all state policies and rules. Develops and manages the Units annual budget and decision items. Evaluates and proposes changes to wildlife policies and regulations.

Wildlife Management/Conservation Field Implementation and Collaboration

Collaborates with multiple teams within Terrestrial (biologists coordinators technicians analysts supervisors pilots etc.) and outside of Terrestrial (CPW Regional and Area teams federal agencies nongovernmental organizations universities etc.) with wildlife management and conservation efforts. Ensures that staff are well-trained to accurately collect and secure data. Directs Unit staff to conduct monitoring efforts complete analyses and reports comment on wildlife policy and management issues communicate to various audiences and implement field activities to achieve the goals and objectives set in approved management and conservation plans. Coaches Unit staff to assist other Terrestrial Unit field staff with field operations and welcomes the assistance of those staff to achieve a functional effective and efficient team approach to fieldwork completion. Directs Unit staff to accomplish annual monitoring programs and the license setting process which include wildlife captures aerial and ground surveys modelling leading license setting meetings and drafting and proofing regulations.

Minimum Qualifications
Eight (8) years of relevant experience in wildlife management wildlife biology wildlife ecology natural resources management wildlife research or an occupation related to the work assigned to this position
OR
A combination of related education in Natural Resources Wildlife Management Biology Aquatic Biology/Fishery Science/Aquaculture/Fishery Management Ecology Environmental Science Zoology/Animal Sciences and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned equal to eight (8) years

  • Current or former Colorado Parks and Wildlife experience
  • Experience with planning budgeting implementation monitoring reporting and evaluating programs and projects
