Are you passionate about environmental protection and eager to contribute to a sustainable future The City of Edmonton is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Coordinator to join our dedicated Environment and Climate Resilience section within Urban Planning and Economy. Bring your expertise in environmental protection regulatory knowledge and remediation including: to our innovative and high performing team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and improving the Citys environmental compliance with a focus on biophysical and aquatic regulations.
The Environmental Coordinator provides crucial support to assigned client business areas ensuring the effective management and maintenance of the organizations environmental management system (Enviso) in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard to continuously enhance the Citys environmental performance. This system is vital for protecting the environment ensuring compliance with environmental legislation with a lifecycle approach from permitting to monitoring and implementation. Collaborate with technical environmental and engineering specialists regarding water and wetland regulations to achieve water resources objectives and targets. Your work will involve planning supporting and coordinating activities to maintain and continuously improve the environmental management system. You will also be responsible for executing processes procedures and controls to ensure environmental compliance and investigating and identifying environmental issues.
What will you do
- Provide high quality advice on water management regulations permitting pathways and risk mitigation strategies
- Dive into wetland compliance and auditing ensuring were always in tip-top shape with our procedures and environmental legislation
- Investigate issues and finding solutions to ensure compliance with municipal and federal water and wetland legislation
- Champion environmental compliance to enhance our ISO 14001-aligned environmental management system
- Preparing high quality scientific and technical reports to support regulatory permitting and environmental compliance issues.
- Share your expertise! Youll provide valuable environmental advice to our internal teams helping them set green objectives
- Craft compelling technical reports translating complex environmental data into clear actionable insights
- Become a trusted liaison fostering strong connections between our business areas and regulatory bodies
- Lead exciting environmental projects and studies from procurement to ensuring top-notch quality
- Stay ahead of the curve researching and developing new environmental practices and emergency preparedness plans

- University Degree in Sciences in Environmental Science Biology Agrology Botany Ecology Conservation or Natural Resource Management
- A minimum of 6 years of experience with a degree (or 8 years with a diploma) in areas such as wetland management Water Act assessment and permitting conservation and management of environmental resources environmental regulation and enforcement
Assets:
- Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline is considered an asset such as;
- Designation as a Professional Biologist (.) or Professional Agrologist (.) or eligible for designation
- Wetland Authenticating Professional (eligible to sign-off on wetland regulatory documents in Alberta)
- Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist (QAES) capable of supporting federal and provincial regulatory applications
Skills required for success:
- Experience with environmental regulatory strategies and industry best practices
- Experience preparing or reviewing Environmental Impact Assessment Environmental Evaluation Biophysical Impact Assessment Environmental Risk Assessment ECO Plans and Erosion and Sediment Control Plans
- Leads all aspects of environmental regulatory management including strategic planning securing diverse federal provincial and municipal approvals and ensuring rigorous compliance through effective monitoring reporting and documentation. Possesses deep knowledge of relevant laws regulations standards guidelines and best management practices
- Competency in analytical and critical thinking with knowledge of incident investigation and risk assessment and management
- Demonstrated relationship-building and conflict-management skills able to present required outputs in a compelling manner and influence decision makers
- Experience conducting compliance inspections and audits
- Experience navigating the provincial Digital Regulatory Assurance System (DRAS)
- Working in cross-functional teams in large complex organizations
- Strong written communication skills capable of developing documents ranging from technical to general
- Ability to represent the City of Edmonton in a professional honest respectful and safe manner
- Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate and facilitate meetings and activities with internal staff and external agencies
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment where work responsibilities depend on team cooperation/collaboration
- Data management abilities
- Research and problem-solving skills to gather required information make decisions and develop recommendations
- Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent)
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel toed boots is a requirement for this position
- You will be required to arrange your own transportation for use while on City business. Where appropriate you will be reimbursed for expenses related to that travel in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. You will be required to obtain business auto insurance
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in unfavourable weather conditions
Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 11 months
Hours of Work:33.75 hours per week
Salary Range: $51.171 - $65.301 Hourly $90150.51 - $115044.04 Annually
Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CSU 52 will be forthcoming shortly.
