Job Description

The Position
The Vice President Finance and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of The Johns Hopkins Hospital serves as the strategic finance leader of the flagship academic medical center of Johns Hopkins Medicine. As a member of the hospitals executive operations and other senior administrative teams the CFO is responsible for the financial direction and oversight of the Hospital with an annual operating revenue exceeding 3.6 billion including retail pharmacies; and more than 11000 FTE employees and 4500 credentialed physicians housestaff and advanced practice providers . The CFO is also a member of the Enterprise Finance Leadership Team and will collaborate with physician and administrative leaders throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine to identify lead and support broad strategic institutional activities and change initiatives.
Key aspects of the role include:

  • Serves as a strategic thought partner to support all financial leadership activities reporting in to the President of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and proactively advises on relevant internal and external environmental factors that could affect financials in the short and long-term.
  • Works closely with and as part of the broader executive finance team reporting to the Johns Hopkins Health System Vice President of Corporate Finance.
  • Participates in and influences institution-wide financial planning and decision-making leveraging financial expertise and knowledge of best practices in a way that is consistent with and supportive of the overall mission vision and strategy of the Hospital JHHS Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Johns Hopkins University.
  • Drives efficient and effective delivery of financial services for the Department of Finances shared services functions and supports the Hospital acting as a catalyst for change to ensure the needs of service lines and department and other leaders are being aligned and fulfilled.
  • Develops the workforce of the future hiring team members and accelerating performance through clear expectations and goal setting and ensuring that career conversations succession planning and development plans are embedded in the work culture.


Key Responsibilities
The Vice President Finance and CFO of The Johns Hopkins Hospital will have a broad set of responsibilities that will encompass the following:

  • Plans develops and provides financial oversight of The Johns Hopkins Hospital
  • Works closely and collaboratively with senior leadership clinical and administrative colleagues to provide leadership in the identification and implementation of performance improvement initiatives across JHH to help drive improved patient safety and satisfaction as well as cost savings and efficiencies
  • Cultivates nurtures and builds strong relationships across the JHM eco-system and helps develop metrics and measures in order to monitor track and maintain the positive impacts of key initiatives
  • Advises leaders across the enterprise to help develop and manage operating and capitalizing budgets
  • Leads month-end and quarter-end financial close activities
  • Collaborates with peers and business leaders (i.e. revenue cycle supply chain contracting and payer relations and financial and accounting services) to establish service line expectations coordinate service line activities and improve performance over time
  • Assists Hospital leadership in real time on daily weekly and monthly initiatives serving as a key partner to the executive team
  • Drives performance improvement within The Johns Hopkins Hospital; aligns with shared services across JHHS and JHM to ensure actions are taken and plans are made in context of the greater good with transparency and mutual accountability
  • Utilizes models and teaches process improvement techniques such as LEAN/Six Sigma
  • Provides oversight of the financial performance of all Hospital departments; monitors trends and performance and develops corrective action plans as needed. Ensures that the Johns Hopkins Health System Vice President of Corporate Finance is provided with accurate and timely financial and statistical information as well as any systemwide reports -- regarding the Hospital and/or any subsidiary assigned to the CFO. Highlights any areas of concern to the JHHS Vice President of Corporate Finance
  • Establishes credibility and builds strong positive working relationships at all levels across of the organization
  • Stays abreast of and ensures that leadership is aware of regulations influencing fiscal management of the Hospital
  • Manages develops and leads an effective responsive best-practice Hospital financial and decision support team with an open communication style and analytical approach to business

The Candidate-Core Competencies
Business Leadership
The CFO must have the requisite skills and characteristics to be both an advisor and partner with thePresident and Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. As a key member of the senior management team the CFO will provide functional and business leadership through financial acumen and business experience. The CFO will work as a peer with healthcare executives and functional heads developing overseeing and tracking plans and results; suggesting improvements; and re-examining assumptions as needed. At the enterprise level the CFO may lead initiatives to implement best practices consolidate operations influence allocation of resources manage costs and improve revenues. As such the CFO will bring strong persuasive collaborative and influencing skills forward.
Strategic Orientation
The successful candidate will be creative and capable of thinking broadly about business opportunities and solutions not just financial issues. The candidate will demonstrate the ability to work with the President senior management team and system level partners to drive performance and shape strategy for The Johns Hopkins Hospital. This may include growth diversification and operational efficiency; program and asset optimization; and payer strategy among others.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate contributions to the strategic success of their prior organizations. The successful candidate will have insight into evolving local national and global healthcare markets from competitive and regulatory perspectives.

The CFO will be a strong member of and contributor to the senior leadership team at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Although their primary role will be to influence and shape the financial plan helping build toward and steward a financial framework for sound decision-making it will be critical that the successful candidate also appreciate and fit in with the teams culture.
The CFO must be open and approachable flexible and an apolitical collaborative and strategic contributor. As Johns Hopkins Medicine continues to grow it is important that senior management maintains strong collegial ties across the diverse operations of the organization. The new CFO will need to be an important example of this attribute and foster collaboration and teamwork across functional lines and geographic boundaries.

Financial Functional Expertise
The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding broad-based functional competence and have a consistent record of accomplishment as a senior finance executive. They will possess a strong combination of strategic orientation and operational focus with emphasis on managing disciplined financial operations and plans.
The candidate will have experience successfully building and managing relationships with important internal and external stakeholders including the Board of Trustees site executives clinical leaders and physicians. Prior experience in being effective and impactful across a large diverse multifunctional financial organization is required as is the ability to hire develop and promote other financial executives.

Change Leadership/Transformation
The CFO will bring experience as a successful change leader. This individual will have played a keyrole in one or more organizational transformations with extensive influence beyond the finance function.
They will possess the ability to communicate a positive vision of the future and rally an organization to embrace the hard work of transformation. This will include defining highly operational and metrics-driven roadmaps to change holding people accountable and celebrating successes in ways that maintain positive momentum and enthusiasm in the organization. They will be realistic and decisive about the resources needed to lead change initiatives and have a record of building teams required to accomplish transformation.

Professional Experience and Qualifications

  • An MBA or CPA is required.
  • Significant senior management experience in healthcare financial planning budget management financial reporting general accounting financial controls and information systems or equivalent
  • Experience in a large academic health system preferred
  • Demonstrated success serving in a complex multi-stakeholder environment
  • Sitting CFO experience highly preferred
  • Proven experience and/or familiarity with Marylands All-Payer Model (or comparable) preferred but not required
  • Experience with capital budgeting FP&A/operational finance financial control and reporting
  • Proven record of recruiting and developing a high-performing diverse and inclusive finance team. Ability to effectively mentor and develop their team
  • Experience with large-scale research funding and financial management
  • Demonstrated revenue cycle and managed care experience preferred but not required
  • Advanced knowledge of budget development control and evaluation financial forecasting cost finding and analysis
  • Analytical negotiation presentation and leadership skills
  • Proficient skills in directing monitoring evaluating and motivating the performance of professional and management staff
  • Effective oral and written communication skills required to work with senior executive hospital administrative staff as well as professional civic and service organizations as a representative of the Hospital
  • High level of proficiency and demonstrated effectiveness in problem-solving and implementing new programs related to increased departmental and organizational operating efficiency while utilizing hospital resources in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Knowledge of current physician and hospital reimbursement and clinical issues confronting academic medical centers
    Proven organizational skills and political savviness
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with physicians and patient care service professionals
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in managing and directing departmental operations and management/supervisory personnel in evaluating training and motivating performance
