Job Description

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with a strong background in soil microbial genomics and evolutionary this project you will help investigate how the evolutionary processes and genomic traits of soil microbes influence microbiome interactions and the persistence of microbial residues under varying environmental conditions. You will work with a multidisciplinary team using advanced genomic and analytical techniques to study soil microbiomes at the system scale. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to research that improves our understanding of soil biogeochemistry and carbon cycling. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems Group in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate.

You will

  • Analyze next-generation sequence (NGS) data from large experimental studies (metagenomic metatranscriptomic and viromic) using bioinformatic and molecular tools.
  • Perform independent computational biology research on microbiome functionality population-level genomic adaptations and their links to ecosystem fluxes.
  • Contribute as a team member to analyze diverse omics datasets from larger collaborative projects including reference pangenome construction and mapping.
  • Use bioinformatic tools to process quantitative stable isotope probing (qSIP) results and integrate these with multi-omics data.
  • Contribute to the conception design and execution of advanced research linking genome-resolved metagenomic traits with soil carbon stability microbial ecophysiology and evolutionary dynamics.
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of multidisciplinary scientists and technical personnel to accomplish research goals including the integration of metagenomic transcriptomic metabolomic and lipidomic datasets.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • PhD in Microbiology Molecular Ecology Environmental Sciences or a related field.
  • Sufficient programming skills in Python and R or a related data analysis language.
  • Broad knowledge of next-generation sequence analysis tools and methods including assembly annotation and classification tools and databases with the ability to rapidly and judiciously evaluate new tools.
  • Familiarity with genome binning and annotation for mixed communities (eukaryotic prokaryotic and viral data) and expertise in evaluating functional capabilities (genes biochemical pathways) of metagenome-assembled genomes.
  • Analytical experience with gene expression (transcriptomic proteomic) or metabolite data.
  • Experience diagnosing data quality issues creating reproducible and documented workflows and producing data reports and visualizations.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Familiarity with stable isotope probing and connecting biogeochemical measurements to genomic data.
  • Experience with command-line tools and executing jobs in high-performance computing environments.
  • Knowledge of maintaining software and code in dedicated virtual environments (e.g. conda).
