Job Description

Bayless is seeking a Substitute School Nurse for the school year. This individual will be called upon as needed to provide nursing support across all school levels in the absence of the regular school nurse.

REGISTERED NURSE FLSA Status: Exempt Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel (Policy GDN)

I.RESPONSIBILITIES

Reports to the building level Administrator

To substantially assist the building administrator staff students and patrons by assuming the following performance responsibilities

Valid state license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) Bachelors Degree preferred First Aid and CPR training Excellent human relations skills Ability to work independently Possess organizational skills and ability for detail Computer proficiency- electronic medical records Able to promote protect maintain and improve the health of students and school personnel in order to provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student

III.FUNCTIONS

Advise teachers counselors administrators and parents of individual students with medical needs including preferential seating and modifications of the educational program to meet individual student needs Collaborate with the school administration on health and wellness issues.

  • Encourage staff inquiries observations and referrals of students regarding real or suspected health problems. Make follow-ups on such referrals
  • Work closely with school counselors and administration in observation interpretation and course of action and/or referral of students displaying mental or physical health needs
  • Inform administration and/or counseling staff of suspected cases of child abuse drug abuse or other instances when disciplinary action may be needed
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students including review of immunizations and physical examinations
  • Assist parents/guardians in securing medical dental or mental health care for the student as appropriate
  • Observe and discuss with students their various health needs and discuss such needs with parents/guardians when indicated. Serve as a liaison between school and medical profession and parents/guardians regarding health problems or school concerns
  • Complete health-related components of screening information for concern packets or Special School District re-evaluation. When appropriate participate in conferences to develop individual education plans (IEP) and may assist in implementing the health related portion of the IEP & 504 plans.
  • Provide student screenings for hearing vision weight and measures blood pressure head lice and scoliosis screening including follow-up activities pertaining to such testing
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Central Office and the county and state health department
  • Assume responsibility for the care of a student or staff member who is ill or injured and administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. Advise school personnel in providing such care as needed to include notification of parents/guardians and referral to appropriate medical or dental care
  • Cooperate with administration in matters regarding student attendance
  • Authorize exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious diseases
  • Implement policy regarding students who are to be excused from physical education for one week or longer or students with limitations in physical education class participation. This involves coordination with student parents/guardians physician counselor classroom or study hall teacher and physical education teacher. At the high school this includes communication with the athletic department regarding physician approval for a student to participate in interscholastic sports
  • Conduct informal health education of the students and staff and formal health education classes as requested by teacher or administration. Participates in the development of a health and wellness curriculum K-12
  • Serves as a resource for superintendent administrators teachers other staff members parents/guardians and students in matters pertaining to health
  • Dispenses medication to students in accordance with school policy. Instruct and supervise other personnel in the administration of medication.
  • Participate in in-service training programs and keep abreast of changes by attending professional meetings workshops and conferences regarding health services. This also includes participation in continuing education or college credit courses. Provide in-services and trainings as needed
  • Participate and cooperate with school staff in developing coordinating and implementing the total school health program. RN participates in the wellness advisory committee
  • Responsible for the health rooms: requisitioning supplies and equipment inventory supervision of auxiliary personnel and volunteers
  • Assist school personnel in establishing sanitary conditions in the schools and notify school personnel of potential safety hazards
  • Assist in the administration of all Bayless School District board policies particularly related to the health and safety of students
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
