Job Description
The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics division of hematology/oncology is seeking a Physician Assistant or ARNP. The selected APP will work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary care team by providing medical and psychological services to children and young adults with cancer and their family members within the Division of Hematology-Oncology in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. Willingness to evaluate and treat patients across the lifespan is necessary to serve the whole accordance with scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law regulations institutional policies and practice agreements the position will independently conduct comprehensive medical psychosocial and developmental health history physical assessments establish medical and psychiatric diagnoses order and evaluates developmental behavioral and diagnostic studies and develop treatment plans. This position will be required to work Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm.
Position responsibilities include:
- Functions independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan deliver and evaluate care of patients.
- Obtains and documents a health history; performs and documents complete system-focused or symptom-specific physical examination assessment and plan of care.
- In collaboration provides healthcare services for primary acute and complex care of patients and manages patients overall care initiates appropriate referrals and consultations and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
- Orders performs interprets and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
- Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
- Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural needed to achieve expected outcomes.
- Utilizes evidence-based approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
- Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
- Facilitates the patients transition between and within health care settings such as admitting transferring and discharging patients.
- Participates in departmental educational conferences and clinical care meetings.
- Accurately and appropriately complete documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance billing and other regulatory standards.
- Inpatient and outpatient hematology patient care (consult service and outpatient population).
- Share management of benign hematology vascular anomalies population and sickle cell population for children and young adults.
- Take outpatient hematology calls from outside providers.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as requested/assigned.

About Division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Transplantation
The division of Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Transplantation is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. The team includes nine faculty members three advanced practice providers and numerous other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive disease-focused multidisciplinary care for patients.The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary state-of-the-art care through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols.We are seeking physician assistants and nurse practitioners who will be able to autonomouslyplan deliver and evaluate health care to patients on our unit under the direction and supervision of our faculty.
Education Required:
- A masters degree is required. Masters degree in nursing is preferred. If masters degree is in a related field a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
- A Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required.
- Current ARNP license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
Experience Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with indirect supervision critical thinking/problem solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform technical skill and function as an independent practitioner defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing and UI Health Care standards.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Federal DEA license.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience of one to three years in the care of pediatric patients or experience that demonstrates knowledge in the care of pediatric patients.
- Current certification in the area of psychiatry such as Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Knowledge and experience in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
- Knowledge and experience in ambulatory care.
