Description

Position Summary:

Methodist University is seeking to hire a Service Learning Coordinator for its new School of Medicine in Fayetteville NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine (MU CFVH) is a candidate program of the LCME with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable community-engaged evidence-based compassionate and equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern North Carolina or wherever they may practice.

The Service Learning Coordinator is responsible for developing implementing and assessing service learning initiatives that align with the mission and curriculum of the allopathic medical school. This role promotes meaningful community engagement experiences that enhance student learning support professional identity formation and address health disparities in the surrounding region. The Coordinator collaborates with faculty students and community partners to integrate service learning into the medical education continuum ensuring alignment with LCME standards and institutional goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Development & Management

  • Design coordinate and evaluate service learning opportunities across all four years of the MD curriculum.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with local regional and national community organizations that address health-related needs.
  • Align service learning experiences with institutional learning objectives including professionalism cultural competence and social accountability.
  • Ensure all programming reflects the values of equity diversity and inclusion.

Student Support & Engagement

  • Advise and mentor medical students involved in service learning initiatives.
  • Coordinate student reflection activities and facilitate debrief sessions to promote critical thinking and professional growth.
  • Support student-led service projects including logistics training risk management and assessment.
  • Work with student government and community engagement VPs to foster student leadership.

Curriculum & Faculty Collaboration

  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate service learning into the curriculum.
  • Support faculty development around best practices in service learning pedagogy and community engagement.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty developing community-based research or educational activities.

Assessment & Reporting

  • Track student participation and learning outcomes using data management tools.
  • Prepare annual reports and presentations for institutional leadership and accreditation purposes (e.g. LCME).
  • Evaluate the impact of service learning on students and community partners using qualitative and quantitative data.

Administrative & Institutional Responsibilities

  • Develop policies and procedures related to service learning programs.
  • Manage program budget and seek external funding opportunities when applicable.
  • Represent the institution at professional conferences and community events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required; Masters degree in education public health higher education administration or a related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in service learning community engagement student affairs or related areas.
  • Experience working in or with medical education or healthcare environments preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Familiarity with LCME accreditation standards especially those related to community engagement and medical professionalism.
  • Experience with curriculum development and program assessment
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health and community-based health initiatives.
