Job Description

For over 50 years Legal Aid Chicago has provided free civil legal assistance to people living in poverty in metropolitan Chicago. Each year our attorneys volunteers and staff help resolve civil legal problems including domestic violence consumer fraud and unfair evictions. Legal Aid Chicago was founded on the philosophy that all individuals are entitled to quality civil legal representation regardless of their income. We work to ensure that poverty is not an impediment to justice.


Legal Aid Chicago offers a hybrid work environment. Our office located in downtown Chicago at 120 S. LaSalle Street is ADA accessible and has convenient access to public transportation and local expressways. This position may require travel to court or other outreach events.


Position: Legal Aid Chicago seeks a full-time attorney to serve as a Supervisor for the Employment Law practice in our Immigrant and Workers Rights (IWR) Practice Group. The IWR Practice Group provides individual legal representation and engages in broad-based advocacy in the areas of immigration farmworker anti-human trafficking and employment law. The IWR Practice Group represents individuals statewide.


Responsibilities: The Employment Law Supervisor will supervise the legal work of staff attorneys paralegals law students and volunteers as they represent low wage workers and farmworkers in their employment claims for wage theft discrimination including disability discrimination and sexual harassment claims for unemployment benefits as well as other violations of federal state and local employment laws.


Duties will include:

  • Directing and supervising claims brought before administrative agencies and subsequent litigation;
  • Co-counseling cases as part of staff development and be responsible for training staff and overseeing their professional development;
  • Maintaining a caseload of individual cases;
  • Engaging in advocacy designed to have a lasting measurable effect on our client community;
  • Engaging in community outreach;
  • Developing relationships and collaborating with community stakeholders;
  • Managing grants within IWR that specifically impact our employment practice;
  • Participating in interdisciplinary practice between employment law and farmworker immigration and human trafficking law practiced in IWR where applicable.

Salary and Benefits:


The budgeted salary range for this position is $89704 - $99704 which reflects an applicant with a law school graduation date between 2020 and 2010.

Requirements

Legal Aid Chicago encourages applications from individuals with relevant experience particularly those who have direct experience with communities we serve or perspectives that help us understand and serve our clients better.


Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois and have at least five years of legal services or general civil practice experience including experience in state or federal court. Applicants must be committed to working as part of an interdisciplinary and highly collegial team and have demonstrated experience working with low-income individuals and/or other vulnerable populations. Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
