Job Description

Overview:

The Planning Advisory Council (PAC) was created by Mayor Michelle Wu in January 2023 via Executive Order to guide a shared vision for a green growing family-friendly Boston and coordinate public investment in the built environment to realize that vision. The PAC is an Co-opal collaborative body that coordinates planning capital planning and implementation and sets standards for public engagement in planning. The Council is chaired by the Chief of Planning and includes the Cabinet Chiefs of Housing Streets Arts & Culture Economic Opportunity & Inclusion Energy Environment & Open Space Equity & Inclusion Finance and Operations along with additional stakeholders. Planning Advisory Council staff comprise a new division within the City of Bostons Planning Cabinet.
Under the direction of the Planning Advisory Councils Assistant Director the Communications and Design Co-op will help to create new ways of sharing updates on major public projects and plans with our constituents using both digital and physical tools. Our goal is to better tell the story of the many investments and improvements the City is making in housing schools streets parks community centers libraries and other spaces and places our residents live work and play.

The Communications and Design Co-op will work up to 14 hours per week at a rate of $21 per hour. This is an in-person role.

Responsibilities:

The Communications and Design Co-op will help us tell our story to the people of Boston!

  • Create and consistently update ArcGIS StoryMaps and other public reporting tools to show the people of Boston how were investing in their neighborhood and making progress against plans.
  • Create update and oversee the translation of digital and physical resources (e.g. handouts infographics) which serve as companion communication tools to StoryMaps.
  • Assess the Citys various photo libraries and help build our own inventory/catalog of photos that capture the beauty and joy of Bostons neighborhoods and public spaces from small business districts to public parks and playgrounds to new housing.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or dreamt up by you.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

What youll bring/who you are:

  • Currently pursuing undergraduate studies in communications emerging media journalism public relations graphic design or political science and possessing exceptional design and communications savvy. Open to other majors if you have expertise in ArcGIS InDesign or Illustrator and/or consider yourself a super user of Canva.
  • Detailed clear cogent and accessible communicator with a passion for great storytelling and strong written and visual communication skills.
  • Expertise in the use of Google Suite ArcGIS StoryMaps as well as graphic design software such as InDesign Illustrator or Canva.
  • Passionate about local government and public service.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized.
