African Nova Scotian Affairs works with government communities and partners to help provide services and programs for the African Nova Scotian community. We work within the community to keep African Nova Scotians informed and to encourage involvement. African Nova Scotian Affairs is a division of the Department of Communities Culture Tourism and Heritage.

The Land Titles Initiative is a program created to address the historical wrong whereby African Nova Scotian settlers were not granted clear legal documentation of land ownership resulting in economic disadvantage for the African Nova Scotians who have descended from those settlers. The LTI resolves land title issues within the historic African Nova Scotian communities of East Preston North Preston Cherry Brook/Lake Loon Lincolnville and Sunnyville in an accessible manner that respects their cultural traditions and practices.

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director Strategic Initiatives the Legal Services Technician 3 will provide comprehensive support in managing coordinating and preparing legal documents associated with arbitration proceedings and hearings. This role primarily supports the Commissioners by assisting with case file management legal research document preparation and serving as a key liaison between the Commissioners legal professionals and other stakeholders.

The Paralegal will also contribute to strategic projects including expansion initiatives and research reports and provide assistance to the Executive Director in the execution of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the team and successful execution of key legal and organizational initiatives.


The Legal Services Technician is responsible for providing critial support to the Executive Director with regards to legal research and a variety of case management services as well as the preparation and processing of legal documents and correspondence. They will draft and prepare complex legal documents including Orders recommendations to the Minister and adjournment notices.

The Legal Services Technician is responsible for case management of large files and file management of ongoing advice and prosecution files. They will serve as a liaison between the Commissioners and legal counsel ensuring seamless communication and efficient exchange of information and ensure that all tasks and responsibilities are completed within legislated timelines demonstrating exceptional organizational and time management skills.

The Legal Services Technician utilizes law libraries and online legal research tools such as QuickLaw Westlaw and CanLii and safeguard the confidentiality of highly sensitive file materials.


As the successful candidate you will have completion of a 2 year paralegal technology course from a recognized institution and have6 years of progressively responsible experience supporting a lawyer in their practice or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

You will be highly skilled in the use of a computer including document management software Microsoft Office Package and Adobe software. This includes experience working with a litigation support database and e-discovery software.

Your high level of initiative judgement and decision-making skills along with the ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines is needed. As is your ability to handle high volumes of information within time constraints while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and balancing conflicting demands.

You will be able to function independently and as a member of a team. As well you will recognize the importance of maintaining security and confidentiality of records at all times.

Salary Range: $2105.04- $2466.26Bi-Weekly
