Job Description:
Summary:
-
Under regular supervision performs basic tasks and projects with lesser complexity.
-
Relies on established guidelines and/or detailed direction for installation decommissioning and troubleshooting problems of network equipment and circuits.

Responsible for preventative and demand maintenance of the network critical infrastructure materials management and becomes familiar with the companys systems and applications.
-
In some instances may be responsible for the outside plant network in a given geographic boundary including metro and long haul fibers.
External Essential Duties:
-
Responsible for asset management processes deliveries and replenishes consumables. Coordinates shipping and receiving of materials.
-
Maintains tools test sets and electronic equipment including but not limited to: fiber optic transmission equipment lightwave multiplexing equipment AC and DC power equipment.

Assists in installs provisions tests and maintains DS0 thru 400G services.
-
May install and test transmission/switching equipment.

Troubleshoots network equipment removes and replaces defective modules tracks spares and ensures repair.

Monitors/ locates route and assists in executing restoration in the event of a service interruption proactively responds to potential problem areas in order to ensure integrity of the network.

Responsible for learning all of the systems and applications required to perform the job function adequately.

Updates installation records enters appropriate detailed log information on trouble tickets for reference and provides reports to others on status updates and issues related to assignments.

Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance and inspections on equipment and on the critical infrastructure including but not limited to: HVAC systems high-voltage electrical systems DC Power Plants. Basic Qualifications:

Utility locating is the process of using technology such as ground penetrating radar to create a map of all the cables pipes and other services under the surface of a site.

Entry-level technician with experience and/or knowledge of at least one of the four major technician disciplines.

Those technical disciplines are: Transmission (DS1/DS3/SONET) Switching (circuit-switching/SS7) TCP/IP (routers/higher-layer protocols) and Outside Plant (Fiber locating OTDR Mass Fusion Splicing etc.).

Have knowledge of locating fiber optic cable right-of-way and As-Builts.

Must maintain site security and cleanliness.

Must have PC skills and be well versed in Microsoft Windows and Office applications.

Must possess the ability to quickly learn corporate databases.

On-call 24x7 on a rotational basis on stand-by call out dispatch and overtime are required as dictated by the business.

Scope of the work/project is:
- The Field Technician 1 will support installation maintenance and repair of fiber optic and copper networks for Client.
- This includes running cables testing connections and troubleshooting issues to ensure reliable service delivery for enterprise clients.
Who is the customer (internal/external)
- The role supports both internal Client project teams and external enterprise customers including hyperscalers and AI data center clients relying on our network for low-latency high-capacity connectivity.
Size of the group this position will be supporting:
- The market consists of 11 field technicians supporting the major Metro-E market in Indianapolis and surrounding area; plus the South Bend/Fort Wayne long haul routes.
Technical environment:
- The role operates in a field-based telecom environment using tools like fusion splicers OTDRs and multimeters.
- Techs work with fiber optic and copper infrastructure following Clients safety and quality standards and use mobile apps for ticketing and reporting.
Work environment / team culture:
- The team is fast-paced collaborative and focused on crushing deadlines for critical builds.
- Techs work outdoors in various weather with a culture that values hustle problem-solving and backing each other up to deliver for big clients.
A typical day look like:
- A typical day starts with reviewing assigned tickets loading gear and heading to job sites.
- Techs install or repair fiber/copper lines test connections and update tickets via mobile apps.
- They coordinate with the ops manager or engineers for escalations and wrap up with site cleanup and reporting.
Top 3-5 skills / technologies and qualifications required:
- Fiber optic and copper cable installation and splicing
- Proficiency with tools like OTDRs fusion splicers and multimeter
- Knowledge of telecom network troubleshooting and testing
- Valid drivers license and ability to work at heights or in confined spaces

- The ideal candidate has a background in telecom or electrical field work with hands-on experience in cable installation or repair.
- Specifically working with handling telecom fibers jumpers shooting ODTR shots and working with Microsoft programs.
