Job Description

DEFINITION OF POSITION: Perform skilled maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines as well as general mechanical and preventative maintenance on school buses and other district-owned vehicles.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Transportation Supervisor

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess diesel or gas mechanic certification
  • Four years of experience working on diesel or gas engines heavy equipment and/or school buses
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state drivers license with a Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) including passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements and with the air brake restriction removed
  • Ability to lift over 50 pounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Pullman School District Transportation Operations
  • Knowledge of safety standards laws codes rules regulations and policies and procedures related to pupil transportation
  • Department of Licensing proficiency and familiarity with driver physical and licensing process
  • Knowledge of dispatch routing software supervisory duties and training of transportation staff
  • Knowledge of bus maintenance procedures and management applications
  • Experience as a trainer of school bus drivers

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

  • Perform required preventive maintenance and regular internal bus safety inspections
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical electrical and engine defects in buses and other vehicles
  • Overhaul and rebuild diesel and gas engines
  • Provide recovery of disabled vehicles and make minor roadside repairs as needed
  • Repair and replace seats glass sheet metal latches and other body components
  • Operate equipment required for performing repairs and maintenance of motor vehicles
  • Operate welding equipment: wire feed and acetylene
  • Carry out regular equipment inspection services and maintenance schedules
  • Complete vehicle maintenance forms and records (work orders stock records inventory of parts etc.)
  • Prepare vehicles for state patrol inspection
  • Drive bus routes when necessary
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop parts room and facility
  • Attend trainings as identified and required by supervisor
  • Work with colleagues in a collaborative manner and be a positive team builder
  • Meet multiple demands in pressure situations and maintain high levels of quality work
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Deal with the public other agencies and district employees in a positive and productive manner
  • Work with a high level of energy
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Work with minimal supervision and be flexible
  • Perform related duties as required

TERMS OF THE CONTRACT:

Salary: Unrepresented Classified Employee Wage Schedule Diesel/Equipment Mechanic: $33.95 $39.72 per hour

Length of Contract: 8 hours/day 260 days/year

Benefits/Leaves: Medical dental vision life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as perboard policy.
