Conditions of Employment

City Laborers must be willing and able to do the following:

The preplacement medical requirements for this title includethe following:

  • Drug Test
  • Physical with lift test
  • Audiogram
  • Vision test

Minimum Requirements

  1. At least Eighteen years of age at time of application close.
  2. Valid drivers license at time of application and throughout the selection process. Valid Wisconsin drivers license required at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) (Class A or B) without the Air Brakes restriction within six months of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. A good driving record at time of application throughout the selection process and throughout employment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Passing probation in the City Laborerposition is contingent upon acquiring and maintaining a valid Commercial DriverLicense (CDL) (Class A or B) without the Air Brakes restriction; maintaining agood driving record and maintaining satisfactory work performance.

By law persons in these positions are required to passpre-employment drug tests and are subject to random drug and alcohol testingduring employment. Candidates must sign a release authorizing the city toreceive the results of any drug and alcohol tests conducted by previousemployers during the past two years if those tests were required by the of Transportation.

  • Ability to exercise care and good judgment regarding safety at all times abiding by safety-related policies laws and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to monitor the work site vicinity including pedestrian and vehicle traffic to ensure the safety of the work crew and the public.
  • Ability to safely use equipment required by the position.
  • Ability to exercise good situational awareness and judgment.

Interpersonal and Customer Focus

  • Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to work cooperatively effectively and fairly with coworkers and residents whose background may differ from ones own.

The current pay rates (Pay Range 8AN) are as follows (ratesshown below are hourly and biweekly):

THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education experienceand/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test astructured interview or other assessment methods. The Department of EmployeeRelations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates tostructured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may includewritten exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined byfurther analysis of the job.

INITIAL FILING DATE- The selection process will beheld as soon as practical after the deadline listed above.
