Job Description

Position Information

Restore Protect and SustainOne Watershed at a Time.

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) Water Resources Division is seeking aWatershed Resource Specialist I to support projects that preserve watershed lands improve water supply and remove threats like invasive species. This is an entry-level position ideal for someone who enjoys fieldwork hiking and caring for the environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the development of watershed management programs and research projects. Participates in data collection activities and inputs into appropriate forms and databases. Assists with the maintenance of watershed and hydrologic files records and other data in the Hydrology-Geology Branch.
  • Hikes to various watershed areas to perform a range of natural resource-related work. Identifies and maps invasive plant and animal threats for removal and control utilizing a GPS system to digitally reconcile the landscape features with the target threats. Participates in the removal of identified threats to the watershed and restoration and protection of impacted areas.
  • Assists with hydrologic data collection and analyses that include but are not limited to geophysical logging rain gauge servicing well head level measurement stream discharge measurement and water sample collection.
  • Attends meetings with various agencies and community groups and participates in discussions on watershed issues to help identify concerns and problems and assists with addressing any BWS-related concerns.
  • Performs other assignments to help protect Oahus vital water resources and native ecosystems for future generations.
Special Work Requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to hike long distances (up to 10 miles) in rugged remote areas carrying gear up to 35 pounds.
  • Willingness and ability to work in various inclement conditions outdoors.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in natural resources management or development botany or horticulture or a closely-related field (e.g. environmental science geology geophysics etc.).

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United order to receive credit for the education proper documentation e.g. a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
  1. Possession of an appropriate valid drivers license (automobile/Type 3) prior to appointment.
  2. Certification in the appropriate category as a Commercial Applicator of Restricted Pesticides prior to completion of probation.
NOTE: The above required licenses/certificates must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
