This recruitment is NOT for the entry-level Emergency Medical Technician I (Recruit) (AM-01). Applicants must possess a current valid State of Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certificate to meet minimum qualification requirements.

TheHonolulu Emergency Services Departmentis hiring for Emergency Medical Technician II. Join our dedicated Emergency Medical Services team who provide critical basic life support services and emergency medical care at the scene of accidents or illness or during patient transport. There is also opportunity to enroll in and attend Mobile Intensive Care Technician courses to progress upward to become paramedics.Appointments will be made on a temporary (limited-term) basis. This is a rewarding opportunity for professionals committed to saving lives and making a direct impact on community health and safety.

Special Working Conditions: Work includes irregular hours rotating and/or night shifts weekend and/or holiday work. Work hours may be on an 8- or 12-hour work schedule depending on the specific position. Must be available to work at all locations on Oahu. Use of safety and protective equipment is required due to possible exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions.Work involves possible exposure to communicable diseases bodily fluids and hazardous materials. Work may involve driving under hazardous road traffic and weather conditions; lifting and moving patients under extreme conditions; and working in hazardous surroundings.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

The following requirements must be met as of August 2 2025 or as stated:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
1) Graduation from high school;and
2) Satisfactory completion of a State of Hawaii Department of Health approved Emergency Medical Technician (Basic Life Support) training program.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:

Required Prior to Appointment:
1) Appropriate valid drivers license (automobile/Type 3);
2) Current Hawaii Board of Medical Examiners Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B) Certificate;and
3) Current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate.

The State of Hawaii does not have reciprocity with other States or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. You must meet the licensing requirements set by the State of Hawaii. For licensing requirements please refer to

EMPLOYMENT SUITABILITY:
Emergency Medical Technicians must possess sound moral character integrity and credibility in addition to the ability to provide emergency medical services. They must have the ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations and must be capable of driving an ambulance safely in response to calls for emergency medical services. If selected the candidates background and driving record will be reviewed to determine the candidates suitability for employment as an Emergency Medical Technician II.

To determine employment suitability for the position of Emergency Medical Technician II the Department of Human Resources will review criminal convictions driving records dismissals from employment and separations from military service under other than honorable conditions.

DRIVING RECORD: At the time of the selection interview candidates will be required to submit evidence of a valid motor vehicle license as well as certified copies of official traffic abstracts from each state they have resided in during thelast five years.
FINGERPRINTING REQUIREMENT: Due to the nature of the position selectees will be required to be fingerprinted as part of their employment suitability review. The Department of Human Resources will review criminal history record information from the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.


MOBILE EMERGENCY CARE SPECIALIST TRAINING PROGRAM:
The Mobile Emergency Care Specialist Training Program was initiated by the City and County of Honolulu to recruit qualified employees for a City career in emergency medical services. The program provides limited-term employment with the City with the opportunity to advance through the various EMT job classifications. Over the course of the full-training program employees attend Mobile Intensive Care Technician (paramedic) classes at Kapiolani Community College and perform progressively difficult emergency medical assignments with the objective of achieving journey-level status at the advanced life support (paramedic) level. Upon completing the full-training program and State licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) the employee will be converted to initial probationary status as a Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I (AM-09).

All persons employed as Emergency Medical Technician II must within a reasonable time progress through to Mobile Emergency Care Specialist I to maintain employment with the City. Continuation in the program will be based upon the successful completion of all phases of training and State licensure in a timely manner. All employees completing the program must agree to work for the Citys Emergency Medical Services for two (2) years following State EMT-P licensure.
