Job Description

Minnehaha Academy is a PreK 12 Christian school and a ministry of the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America.

Job Responsibilities:

The Director of Human Resources is a strong Christian role model who demonstrates a broad range of responsibilities that bridge both the human capital and operational aspects of the school. They think critically about the financial implications of HR decisions and ensure that human resource strategies contribute to the overall financial health and operational efficiency of the independent school. They play a crucial role in managing the schools most valuable asset: its people. The Director of Human Resources enhances the organizations human resources by planning implementing and evaluating human resources policies programs and practices and oversees employee relations and employee development compensation and benefit Director of Human Resources reports to the Chief Financial & Operating Officer.

I. Strategic HR & Compliance:

  • Policy Development & Implementation: Developing updating and ensuring compliance with all HR policies and procedures including employee handbooks in line with federal state and local employment laws (e.g. FMLA ADA EEO wage and hour laws) and independent school specific regulations.
  • Strategic Workforce Planning: Collaborating with the CFOO and other leadership to forecast staffing needs develop recruitment and retention strategies and ensure the school has the talent required to meet its mission and goals.
  • Compensation & Benefits: Overseeing the administration of compensation structures (salaries stipends) and managing all employee benefits programs (health dental life disability insurance retirement plans like 403(b)) often in collaboration with external brokers and the CFOO to ensure cost-effectiveness and competitive offerings.
  • Performance Management: Developing implementing and evaluating performance appraisal systems for both teaching and support staff ensuring clear expectations regular feedback and processes for improvement.
  • Employee Relations & Conflict Resolution: Serving as a primary point of contact for employee grievances disciplinary actions and conflict resolution ensuring fair and consistent application of policies and procedures. This often involves sensitive situations and requires strong communication and mediation skills and adherence to the highest levels of confidentiality.
  • Legal Compliance & Risk Management: Working closely with the CFOO on all employment-related legal matters including conducting background checks maintaining accurate personnel records and ensuring the schools practices minimize legal risks.

II. Operational HR:

  • Recruitment & Onboarding: Managing the full recruitment lifecycle including writing job descriptions posting advertisements screening applications conducting interviews verifying credentials and references and overseeing the onboarding process for new hires (orientation paperwork)
  • Oversees management of faculty coach and supplemental contractsin alignment with budgets and school needs
  • Oversees the management of payroll Administration (often in collaboration with Finance): Ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing including deductions taxes and compliance with all relevant regulations. While the CFOO oversees finance the Director of Human Resources will often be responsible for providing the necessary data and oversight for payroll.
  • Leave Management: Administering all types of employee leave (e.g. FMLA sick leave personal leave sabbatical) in accordance with school policy and statutory requirements.
  • Training & Development: Identifying training needs coordinating professional development opportunities for staff and ensuring compliance with any required training (e.g. safeguarding CPR).
  • Oversees management of HR Information Systems (HRIS): Managing and maintaining HR databases and systems to ensure accurate record-keeping reporting and efficient HR operations.
  • Offboarding: Managing the exit process for departing employees including exit interviews final paperwork and benefits cessation.

III. Reporting and Collaboration (to the CFOO and others):

  • Budget Management: Collaborating with the CFOO on the HR departments budget and contributing to overall school budgeting as it relates to personnel costs.
  • Reporting and Analytics: Providing regular reports and data analysis to the CFOO on key HR metrics.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Working closely with other departments (e.g. academics admissions facilities) to ensure HR initiatives support the schools overall operational effectiveness and mission.
  • Strategic Partner: Serving as a trusted advisor to the CFOO and other school leaders on all human capital matters offering insights and solutions that align with the schools strategic objectives.

Director ofHuman Resources Skills and Qualifications:

Past experience in human resources or related experience including recruiting human resources management benefits administration performance management compensation and wage structure supporting diversity employment law etc.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel objects tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Official business hours of the school are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This salaried position may require some longer hours including infrequent evening and week-end work.

Required Education and Experience

  • A bachelors degree and two years human resource experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • A masters degree in human resource management and/or four years experience in the HR field.
  • HR professional certification(s) a plus.
