Job Description

Description of Work

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Distribution Specialist I in our Financial Services Department. The primary responsibility of this position is to prepare monthly quarterly or annual transfers of tax revenues to other state agencies as required by NC General Statutes. This position will perform procedures to ensure accurate & timely processing of returns and/or payments to the departments tax system. This position also reviews Public Educational and Governmental (PEG) Channel Certification Forms received from local governments annually to determine eligibility for PEG Channel funding. Position provides assistance to the local governments and qualifying municipalities of North Carolina for the monthly distribution of sales and use tax as well as various quarterly distribution of other taxes.

Assessments will be given as part of the interview process.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Working knowledge of taxation and enforcement provisions of one or more schedules of the revenue codes including pertinent court decisions Attorney General rulings and administrative regulations; and methods and procedures used in collecting delinquent taxes
  • Ability to analyze routine tax problems and make proper application of tax laws interpretations and regulations; evaluate and exercise Judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting departmental policies and procedures; and communicate clearly and concisely in oral or written form
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of the tax schedule(s)
  • Demonstrated experience processing returns and/or payments
  • Ability to work independently
Management Preferences:
  • Candidates with at least one-year prior auditing experience
  • Candidates with at least one year of experience in Individual Income Tax and Sales & Use Tax

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor degree in Business/Public Administration Economics Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in tax accounting and auditing work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
