Job Description

Do you have an Understanding and being sensitive to the experiences of individuals facing homelessness poverty mental illness and addiction Are you able to conduct thorough assessments and diagnose mental health and addiction issues accurately The Mustard Seed is Seeking a Clinical Counsellor.

The clinical counsellor is committed to helping people experiencing homelessness or poverty transition towards maintaining sustainable and healthy lifestyles through the provision of appropriate treatment and case management services. This includes services that are both inclusionary and flexible for individuals with mental illness addictions or concurrent disorders (i.e. addiction and mental illness). The clinical counsellor will work within a team environment to provide appropriate counselling and assessments to adults to enable appropriate provision of care and tailor interventions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To meet the holistic needs of the client and to provide access to services and integration across the care continuum.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with clients their families colleagues and the Indigenous community; Consult with them to provide appropriate treatment services based on best practices client needs and a combination of care practices and approaches.
  • Conducts mental health and addictions assessments and treatments assertive case treatment planning crisis interventions consultations individual couple and family counseling as well as group therapy and clinical education to provide facilitate and coordinate client access to services.
  • Advocate for client as needed both to access resources within and outside the organization continue to update resources for staff clients and future students.
  • Provide a wide battery of assessments to both pediatric and adult populations including but not limited to developmental psycho-educational and behavioral.
  • Provide input into program evaluation upon request.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Masters degree in counselling psychology or social work; active or eligible for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) or Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW) with a clinical designation or an equivalent regulatory body either provisionally or fully.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and treatment; substance abuse and addictions treatment psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects); psychotherapeutic and counselling skills with particular emphasis on evidence-based interventions with trauma and attachment disruption in populations who experience historical oppression.
  • Understanding of vulnerable populations particularly those experiencing homelessness and 1-2 years experience working in the field.
  • Familiarity with legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to the clientele.
  • Specialized training in psychological tests and assessments with a declared competency in administration.
  • Work with adult populations; some pediatric work also preferred.
  • Working knowledge with MS Word and Office experience with an electronic medical record system is a benefit.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry we require our employees sign an agreement indicating that they will respect and not detract from our Statement of Faith.
  • Time more than regular working hours may be required on occasion.
  • This position is primarily an office position.
  • Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs is required on occasion.
  • Local travel to various Mustard Seed sites and external agencies may be required.
  • Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive.
  • Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
