Job Description

Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist
Location: Auckland New Zealand Public Healthcare
Employment Type: Full-time
Service: Adult Community Mental Health Services

Purpose of the Position

As a Consultant Psychiatrist within Aucklands public healthcare system you will play a vital role in the delivery of high-quality culturally responsive mental health care to adults in the community. You will work within a well-established multidisciplinary service committed to holistic and recovery-oriented treatment that reflects the cultural diversity of Tmaki Makaurau Auckland.

This is a permanent position that supports a team aligned with the Choice and Partnership Approach (CAPA) delivering services that uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and strive for equity in mental health outcomes particularly for Mori and Pacific peoples.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments diagnoses and treatment planning for adult clients.
  • Manage psychiatric reviews and provide clinical leadership in risk assessment and management.
  • Collaborate effectively with psychologists nurses social workers occupational therapists peer support workers and cultural advisors within the community team.
  • Contribute to shared decision-making and person-centred care in partnership with service users and whnau.
  • Uphold safe prescribing practices and monitor the effectiveness of pharmacological interventions.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentoring to junior medical staff and registrars.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings clinical reviews and peer consultation forums.
  • Take part in quality improvement initiatives service development and continuing professional education.
  • Promote equity cultural competence and trauma-informed care as core principles of service delivery.
  • Support the implementation of Mori models of care and ensure alignment with cultural frameworks that enhance access and responsiveness for tangata whaiora.

Key Requirements

Qualification & Registration:

  • Eligible for vocational registration as a psychiatrist with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

  • FRANZCP or equivalent international qualification in psychiatry.

  • Current Annual Practising Certificate (or eligibility to obtain one).

Experience & Attributes:

  • Prior experience working in adult community mental health settings.

  • Understanding of recovery principles and a commitment to collaborative strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and across systems of care.
  • Cultural competence and a deep commitment to bicultural practice and the values of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Awareness of the social determinants of mental health and the ability to tailor treatment accordingly.
  • Strong documentation clinical reasoning and risk management skills.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Experience working with Mori and Pacific populations.

  • Familiarity with the CAPA model or similar collaborative care frameworks.
  • Interest in service innovation equity initiatives and integrated models of care.
  • Ability to mentor trainees support workforce development or lead service projects.
