JOB TITLE:

Intramural Senior Sports Official

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide expert leadership oversight and decision-making in the administration of intramural games by ensuring consistent enforcement of rules managing officiating crews mentoring junior officials and maintaining the highest standards of sportsmanship safety and game integrity in alignment with organizational policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend required program meetings and help run sport specific trainings
  • Assist with participant check-in and game site set-up/clean-up
  • Officiate games while enforcing Intramural Sports policies procedures and rules
  • Leading and assisting new officials throughout the season.
  • Watching game film on your officiating crew to be able to help your crew improve each week.
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Expectations of Intramural Sports Officials:

Officials are expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of the rules and regulations for the sports they officiate and apply them consistently and fairly throughout each game. They must maintain professionalism by upholding integrity impartiality and respect for all participants staff and spectators both on and off the field.

Effective game management is essential which involves enforcing rules ensuring player safety maintaining control and addressing conflicts in a calm and authoritative manner. Clear and confident communication with players fellow officials and supervisors is important before during and after each contest.

Officials are expected to arrive early for assignments in proper uniform with the necessary equipment and be prepared both physically and mentally for the demands of officiating. They should work as part of a team with co-officials site supervisors and intramural staff to ensure that all games are conducted fairly and smoothly.

While officiating is an important responsibility we understand that our officials are students first. As such flexibility and understanding around academic commitments are a priority. Officials should also be open to receiving constructive feedback participating in training and evaluations and continuously working to improve their officiating skills. Adaptability is key as officials may be required to officiate different sports or positions depending on the schedule and needs of the program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Current UW student

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience officiating intramural or competitive sports is preferred
  • Certification from a recognized officiating body (WHSAA NIRSA USA Basketball etc.) is highly preferred
