The Health Information Management Release of Information Specialist completes high skill level requests for medical and/or billing information in a timely and efficient manner. This position must be knowledgeable in all release types and all work queues. This position works in a customer-focused environment protecting and safeguarding the patients right to privacy by ensuring only authorized individuals access medical information.
Responsibilities
Exhibits a high-level of knowledge of Cone Health policies Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule (HIPPA) Office of Civil Rights (OCR) guidelines Title 42 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) and North Carolina State laws to include next of kin the rights of multiple variations of Power of Attorney Lien status rights of minors parents guardian-as-litems subpoenas court orders and search warrants in order to determine compliance of requests prior to responding/processing. Ensures that valid authorization is obtained to support the release of information. Ensures accuracy in processing the proper data to be released and ensures that the minimum necessary is sent in accordance with state and federal regulations while releasing records from numerous electronic and legacy sources to prevent breach of patient confidentiality. Coordinates visits from Health Plan Reviewers and Research Monitors and assists reviewer in locating documents as needed. Obtains provider approval to release psychiatric encounter records when requested by patient. Works in the electronic health record and electronic databases to locate specific clinical documents for the purpose of fulfilling a request. Scans and enters accurate requests for medical records and abstract information needed to complete requests. Performs other duties as assigned.
