Job Description

Description

The Forensic Technician II performs technical investigative work for the assigned Department. Work involves examining physical evidence such as fingerprints and firearm ballistics to develop facts pertinent to criminal investigations. Employee is also responsible for reconstructing crime scenes photographing evidence preparing court exhibits and providing testimony. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of complex independent laboratory tests; analyses classifications comparisons and identifications of all types of physical evidence from crime scenes with emphasis and specific recognized expertise in latent fingerprint examination.

Examines and evaluates evidence and determines techniques and procedures to be used in the development of latent prints on diverse items of physical evidence by using physical chemical and optical or any combination of techniques appropriate to the substance being examined.

Receives custody of evidence which includes organizing cataloging and maintaining related records.

Submits evidence for laboratory analysis.

Processes evidence for fingerprints.

Transfers evidence to court and labs as necessary.

Assists in processing crime scenes which includes collecting and preserving physical evidence and photographing crime scenes.

Prepares detailed investigation reports; assembles and organizes statements and evidence for presentation in court.

Attends court proceeding and presents evidence and testimony.

Cooperates with law enforcement officers of other governmental units in investigations and arrests.

Responds to and documents crime scenes through photography sketches and other forms of evidence collection.

Provides expert testimony to the court as needed.

Performs evidence entry evaluation maintenance and protection; destroys evidence as necessary.

Evaluates and matches fingerprints in the crime scene investigation process.

Ensures that laboratory evidence is fully stocked and in order.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree and a minimum five years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

Must be a U.S. citizen.

Certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Texas required. Position may require other advanced licenses and certifications.

Possession of a valid drivers license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas drivers license within 90 days.
