Job Description

If anything is at the heart of the University of Nevada Reno its sports. From football and basketball to boxing swim and dive the sports section of The Nevada Sagebrush is responsible for providing the news scores updates and analysis that modern sports fans expect.

Applicants should be experienced with sports writing and have a passion for collegiate athletics especially at the University of Nevada Reno. Applicants should also have experience with AP style as well as a basic understanding of media ethics and media law especially as they pertain to reporting on a college are expected to be able to cover sports events throughout the week and publish articles within 12 hours on the Nevada Sagebrush website.

All applicants must submit 3-5 clips with their application. Clips must be work samples and 1000 words or less. Essays will not be accepted.

Responsibilities

  • Write edit and curate content for the 2 of the Sports section and update website content throughout the week.

  • Content should be local-oriented and state and national stories should either be localized or run in moderation.

  • While coverage of football and basketball may dominate the section during those seasons the sports editor should strive to include as much coverage of non-marquis sports as possible

  • Recruit and maintain relationships with contributing writers

  • The Sports Editor is the primary editor for any and all sports-related contributor work.

  • It is up to the section editor to assign individual deadlines to individual writers

  • No matter what individual deadlines are all work being published in the Tuesday print edition must be in to the Copy Desk by 12 PM Sunday.

  • Online-first or online-exclusive articles are assigned deadlines on an article-by-article basis but it is the editors responsibility for enforcing these deadlines.

  • Assist in page layout design and editing during Monday deadlines.

  • Ensure all Sports content is posted to both in a timely manner and in a manner consistent with the quality and style guidelines of The Sagebrush.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must be a student of the University of Nevada Reno.

  • Candidate must maintain a 2.75 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 credits

  • Candidate must have experience with AP style and writing for print or online

  • Candidate has experiencewriting headlines or experience with or knowledge of SEO and the elements of a good headline

  • Candidate should be familiar with current Sagebrush work (articles multimedia social media)

  • Candidate has have experience writing copy for social media especially Facebook and Twitter

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidate has experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (especially InDesign) is preferred

  • Candidate has experience with multimedia programs (Premiere Pro Audition After Effects) is preferred
