More Than Words (MTW) is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system court involved homeless or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. The Opportunity
More Than Words (MTW) seeks a motivated thrift-savvy detail-oriented engaging individual to lead a new position training and empowering young people to manage the warehouse sorting process for our growing thrift social enterprises. With the opening of Boomerangs by More Than Words in Cambridge at the end of 2024 we have identified a need and opportunity to level up sourcing systems to grow our thrift sales in all retail locations. This new position on our operations team will lead shifts of 3-6 youth employees to manage a diverse material donation stream to price and send out to our brick-and-mortar retail thrift stores with a clear goal of driving increased sales and laying the groundwork for future stores. This position reports to Bostons Director of Business Operations - Retail with a dotted line to the Director of Business Operations Wholesale and Logistics.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
Train Youth Employees:
- Empowering Training: alongside youth to provide ongoing training feedback and support for youth to improve performance in warehouse sorting shifts that meet Key Performance Indicators and support development of competencies
- High expectations and accountability: Hold youth employees accountable for all safety policies and performance including attendance punctuality professionalism and efficiency with tasks on shift
- Focus on mission and whole person needs: Work with other staff to support youth performance reviews progress through the model with a relentless focus on mission and goals to support young people to get on a path to a living wage
- Develop and implement training manual updates and ongoing systems for training in partnership with other staff
Oversee Sorting and Inventory Logistics with Young People:
- Donation Intake and Sorting: Oversee and codify systems for the intake sorting storage and categorization of donated items to ensure efficient processing. Ensure excellent customer service for all in-person drop-offs of donations
- Pricing Strategy: Develop and implement pricing strategies for a variety of donated items (books clothing home goods) ensuring competitive and fair pricing for thrift store sales
- Quality Control: Inspect donated items for quality condition and suitability for sale ensuring only sellable items are processed. Oversee systems for removal of non-usable items
- Inventory Management: Maintain accurate records of inventory levels track incoming donations and manage storage space effectively
- Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve donation processing workflows to enhance efficiency and productivity
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant health safety and regulatory requirements in the handling and processing of donations and warehouse operations including use of equipment that may include baler and pallet jack
Support Thrift-Retail Locations with Improved Inventory Management and Improved Sales:
- Collaboration: Work closely with retail leadership and managers in 3 locations (Boston Waltham Cambridge) to understand inventory needs and systems to provide items to maximize sales
- Delivery logistics: In partnership with the sourcing leadership that oversees a fleet of truck shifts coordinate the timely delivery of inventory needed at each site and any future locations
- Reporting: Generate regular reports on donation volumes processing times and sales performance to inform decision-making

Key Qualifications:
- High-energy enjoy teaching others hitting goals and working in a fast-paced environment during evening and/or weekend hours
- 1-3 years of retail event and/or business experience and a proven ability to inspire and compel others to exceed expectations
- Successful experience teaching training or supervising new learners and a talent for empowering and engaging others to work together to achieve goals
- Exceptional communication and sensitivity for MTWs diverse constituencies
- Great customer service technological aptitude and a willingness to be accountable for the business are keys to success
- Must be able to regularly lift boxes weighing approximately 25 lbs. move easily up and down stairs and possess a valid drivers license. Candidate must be able to work some evening and weekend shifts.
Driving Requirements:
- This is a non CDL Position
- Must have obtained a drivers license at least 3 years prior to meet insurance requirements
- Must have a safe driving record in accordance with insurance requirements and keep in good standing
- Must have or able to obtain a Massachusetts DOT medical card and renew as needed
- Must have or obtain a Forklift Certification and renew as needed
Schedule:5 days/week- to be determined but likely Sunday-Thursday 9-5
Compensation: $52000- $57749; commensurate with skills and experience
