Job Description

The College Counselor provides a comprehensive and student-oriented college-counseling program that meets the needs of the students and their parents in keeping with St. Marys mission as a Catholic college-preparatory school.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and implement all aspects of the 9th- 12th college-counseling program.
  • Helps students recognize their potential and achieve realistic college and career goals by providing opportunities to develop self-understanding about their interests abilities and attitudes. Provide encouragement and accurate timely information in a supportive professional manner.
  • Hold individual and group college planning sessions with students and parents orienting them to the college admissions process and providing up-to-date resource materials and information.
  • Conduct financial aid planning nights for parents and provides individual financial aid counseling as well as assistance with understanding and completing the FAFSA form and other financial documents required by colleges.
  • Give students and parents access to appropriate data systems and information/communication technology designed to facilitate the college search and application process.
  • Assist students in completing and submitting their college application materials.
  • Help students interpret their school records and provide these records to the appropriate colleges with support from the HS Registrar.
  • Maintain electronic data records on student admission applications providing results of goals and final outcomes.
  • Support all Juniors in completing admissions applications for practice writing a college essay and preparing a personal resume.
  • Provide counselor recommendation letters for students applying to college and support the faculty recommendation letter process.
  • Maintain an active diplomacy with the college admissions community by developing successful partnerships with colleges visiting college campuses and cultivating strong contacts with college admission personnel.
  • Schedule all college admission representatives visits to campus with coordination support from the Guidance Administrative Assistant.
  • Maintain and advertise listing of summer college opportunities for all St. Marys students.
  • Advertise opportunities for college financial scholarships to the school community.
  • Supervise the registration ordering and administration of AP Exams.
  • Coordinate and provide opportunities for standardized test improvement (e.g. SAT and ACT test prep resources).
  • Prepare the School Profile annually.
  • Maintain active membership in national and regional professional associations.
  • Abide by the Statement of Principles of Good Practice approved by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in applicable field of study/education from an accredited college or university.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process.
  • 5 years of experience in the college admissions process either guiding high school students in their application process or serving at the college level in admissions or career counseling.
  • Dedication and expertise in counseling a range of students in the career planning and college process.
  • Evidence of high levels of organizational skills and the ability to work closely and effectively with students parents and colleagues in the school.
  • Knowledge of the financial aid and scholarship process.
  • Knowledge of Naviance software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of Catholic education.

Pay Range: $65000 - 72000 Annualized
