Job Description

Reports To: Mechanic Shop Foreman

Duty Days: 261 days (8 hours/day)

Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt

Pay Grade: A08

Date Revised: 2/2025

Qualifications:

College hours high school diploma or GED

ASE and/or TASBT certification(s) in vehicle repair (preferred)

Five years mechanical experience in vehicle repair or other related experience

Tools of the trade to be provided by employee

One-year supervisory experience (preferred)

Able to work productively without continual supervision

Able to communicate in English (written and oral)

Computer knowledge including Microsoft Outlook and other Microsoft programs.

Formal training in vehicle repair (preferred)

Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements

Pass annual physical in accordance with state law

School Bus Driver Certification or able to obtain with six months of hire date

Negative result on drug and/or alcohol tests administered as pre-employment random post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis in accordance with federal law and district policy

Able to read and interpret maps and routes

Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits

Primary Purpose:

Make mechanical repairs to the districts fleet. Provide for a safe and reliable vehicle for the transport of students and employees of KISD. In the absence of the Mechanic Shop Foreman coordinate and supervise the day-to-day activities of the shop personnel to maintain the safety and reliability of the fleet. Safely drive students to and from school on a schedule assigned by the Transportation Department. Safely transport students and staff to and from district sanctioned activities. Always act in the best interest of the district the students and the community.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Able to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and effectively perform repairs.
  2. Rebuild engines (gasoline and diesel) transmissions brakes (mechanical and air) front ends and suspension systems rear differentials and suspension systems and/or other major systems/components.
  3. Able to remove repair starters alternators fuel pumps injectors etc.
  4. Diagnose analyze and tune engines i.e. proficient in the use of engine analyzers.
  5. Keep accurate and up-to-date records of vehicle maintenance and repairs and be able to learn and use the Fleet Maintenance software.
  6. Available for after hours and weekend work as needed.
  7. Oversee train and mentor the Mechanics and Senior Mechanics employed at the vehicle repair facility.
  8. Obtain a state vehicle inspector (including Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV)) license to be able to inspect district vehicles.
  9. Maintain proficiency with upgraded fleet vehicles.
  10. Responsible for the upkeep repair replacement and protection of personal tools. Certain largetools and equipment are supplied by the District.
  11. Operate any Katy ISD school bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while following all traffic laws district policies district regulations and Transportation Department regulations.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Equipment Used:

Small hand tools drills drill press grinder automotive diagnostic equipment air power tools welder cutting torch jacks lift equipment and phone. School buses emergency equipment (triangle reflectors fire extinguisher bodily fluids kit etc.) and district vehicles.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate walking standing climbing heavy lifting carrying stooping bending kneeling and reaching. Work outside and inside around moving objects vehicles and machinery with moving parts. Exposure to dampness and humidity toxic chemicals exhaust fumes environmental allergens gasoline and diesel fuel. Prolonged driving and sitting. Repetitive hand motions moderate carrying reaching and capable of lifting 100 pounds.
