Job Description

Project Background

Hispanic Federation (HF) is the nations premier Latino nonprofit membership organization. Founded in 1990 HF supports Hispanic families and strengthens Latino institutions through grantmaking and direct services in the areas of education health immigration civic engagement economic empowerment and the environment.

Since its inception in 1990 HF has focused on supporting and strengthening Latine-led community-based nonprofit organizations as a key instrument for social justice and economic empowerment. This initiative Crear y Crecer su Negocio supported by Congressional Community Programs Funds aims to provide technical assistance tools and training to support small business and entrepreneurs and strengthen the states small business ecosystem.

Project Description

HF is seeking a consultant to develop two small business toolkits to serve as guides for primarily community-based business assistance non-profit organizations serving small business owners and bilingual English - Spanish entrepreneurs in Connecticut to create manage and grow their business. These toolkits will encompass information strategies and best practices for strengthening business and financial management acumen respond to unforeseen emergencies access growth opportunities and foster small business learning circles and conversations to support entrepreneurs in their recovery and growing efforts.

Total Funds Available: Up to $25000

Payments and Reporting

The consultant will submit invoices using a template provided by HF. All payments must be aligned with the progress toward deliverables.

Scope of Work

The selected consultant will develop two curricula for use primarily by community based business assistance organizations. One curriculum for start-up and early-stage small businesses covering basics concepts for new entrepreneurs (Business 101) and 1 another curriculum orientated toward strategic growth financial mastery leadership digital expansion and sustainability (Business Intermediate - Advanced).

The curricula will be designed to provide practical step-by-step learning experience for businesses at any stage of operation and accessible to a 9th grade audience at education levels.

The curricula will be organized into modules for an 8-week training course designed to incorporate a significant practical component and accommodate hybrid instructional formats. Each toolkit topic section must include interactive tools and materials including but not limited to hands-on exercises case studies and lists of most relevant online resources.

Each curriculum will be accompanied by supplemental materials e.g. business plan templates budget planning worksheets marketing calendars funding directory of Connecticut grants and loans for small businesses etc.

Each module should include evaluation tools such as pre- and post-training assessments quizzes and questionnaires.

The contractor is required to provide one in-person training session for Community Based Organizations (CBOs) on curriculum implementation for each curriculum.

The Business 101 Toolkit must have a minimum of 4 sections. Topics will include but not be limited to:

  1. Assessing and Starting a Small Business
    • Conducting a feasibility study
    • Identifying target market and customers
    • Developing a business plan
    • Meeting legal and regulatory requirements
    • Financing options and resources
  2. Building and Managing a Small Business
    • Setting up effective operations and processes
    • Developing a marketing strategy
    • Building a strong brand identity
    • Managing finances and cash flow
    • Hiring and managing employees
    • Leveraging technology and digital tools
  3. Human Resources and Employee Development
    • Recruiting and selecting staff
    • Providing employee training and professional development
    • Managing performance management and designing and conducting an evaluation
    • Creating a positive work culture
    • Implementing employee benefits and retention strategies
  4. Technology and Digital Transformation
    • Assessing technological needs
    • Selecting and implementing business tools and software
    • Following best practices in cybersecurity
    • Introducing computing and data management
    • Implementing automation and process optimization
  5. Marketing and Sales Strategies
    • Understanding market research and analysis
    • Creating effective marketing campaigns
    • Developing digital marketing strategies and increasing social media presence
    • Implementing sales techniques and customer relationship management
    • Measuring marketing effectiveness

The Business Intermediate - Advanced Toolkit must have a minimum of six sections. Topics will include but are not limited to:

  1. Strategic Business Review & Growth Planning
    • Conducting business diagnostics
    • Revisiting vision mission and market positioning
    • Setting long-term growth goals (for revenue impact expansion)
    • Identifying new market opportunities
  2. Financial Strategy & Profit Optimization
    • Budgeting and cash flow management
    • Understanding financial statements
    • Reviewing profit margins and pricing optimization
    • Making financial projections
  3. Sales Strategy & Revenue Diversification
    • Mastering account management
    • Comparing B2B vs. B2C sales tactics
    • Establishing strategic pricing
    • Reviewing subscription licensing and recurring revenue models
  4. Advanced Marketing & Brand Positioning
    • Marketing & analytics (Google Analytics email performance)
    • Understanding paid advertising (Facebook/Meta Ads Google Ads)
    • Rebranding or evolving your brand for growth
  5. Leadership and HR Processes
    • Assessing leadership & scaling businesses
    • Building culture in small companies
    • Understanding legal HR considerations and hiring processes (contracts labor laws onboarding)
  6. Technology & Digital Expansion
    • Implementing website upgrades & e-commerce integration
    • Leveraging CRM and marketing automation tools
    • Focusing on cybersecurity and data protection
    • Reviewing AI tools for small businesses (ChatGPT Canva AI etc.)
  7. Funding Opportunities and Grow Capital
    • Evaluating growth-stage funding options (lines of credit VC angel investors)
    • Creating financial investors narrative
    • Considering capital use: staffing inventory marketing
  8. Scaling & Exit Planning
    • Exploring business sustainably: franchising licensing expanding locations etc.
    • Understanding when and how to step back from day-to-day operations
    • Reviewing exit strategies: selling the business succession etc.

  • Toolkit in digital form PDF and editable PPT formats
  • Each toolkit must be bilingual English- Spanish
  • Templates in digital format PDF and Word (English- Spanish)
  • At least one training session for CBOs about curriculum implementation
