Job Description

Job Title: Diagnostic Medical Physicist

Specialty: Radiologic Imaging and Radiation Safety

Place of work (City/State): Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center

Primary Location:

  • 1481 West 10th Street Indianapolis IN 46202

Additional Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs):

  • Terre Haute IN
  • Bloomington IN
  • Brownsburg IN

Duration: 12 months contract with the possibility of a 4-years extension
Shift Schedule: Monday Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM EST (with 24/7 phone/electronic consultation availability)

License /Certifications:

  • Certification by one of the following:
    • American Board of Radiology (ABR)
    • Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine
    • American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM)
    • American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP)
  • Certification in the appropriate subfield is required (e.g. Diagnostic Medical Physics Nuclear Medical Physics or MRI Physics)
  • Ongoing CE requirements must be maintained

Minimum Qualification/ Experience:

  • Qualified Medical Physicist (QMP) per ACR guidelines
  • Experience in routine and advanced diagnostic equipment performance testing protocol optimization radiation safety support and shielding design/verification
  • Familiarity with regulations from NHPP VHA JC ACR NCRP

Responsibilities:

  • Perform annual inspections (not exceeding 14 months) on imaging equipment including CT MRI PET SPECT Fluoroscopy Nuclear Medicine and Dental X-ray systems to ensure compliance with VHA NHPP JC and ACR standards.
  • Conduct performance testing on new relocated or repaired imaging equipment prior to clinical use or after major repair.
  • Provide 24/7 phone and electronic consultation including assistance with:
    • Radiation exposure calculations (patient/staff/fetal)
    • Over-exposure report preparation
    • Incident investigation and protocol recommendations
    • Staff training related to imaging safety
  • Offer radiation shielding support including design calculation inspection and report documentation based on NCRP Reports 145 and 147.
  • Conduct protocol optimization reviews for CT and fluoroscopy annually per scanner to ensure radiation dose reduction and quality.
  • Assist with technical QA program development analysis of QA trends and recommending corrective actions.
  • Provide support to Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) including attending Machine-Produced Radiation Safety Committee (MPRSC) meetings.
  • Generate detailed written reports of all inspections and evaluations within 30 business days.
  • Perform compliance and quality checks on display monitors and viewing conditions for diagnostic adequacy.

Description:

  • This opportunity is for a Diagnostic Medical Physicist to support the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and affiliated outpatient centers across Indiana.
  • The position requires full-spectrum support for imaging equipment performance evaluation compliance testing protocol review radiation safety and consultation services.
  • The candidate must meet rigorous certification and experience standards be responsive to urgent needs (within 48 hours on-site for patient-care-impacting issues) and provide both hands-on inspection and virtual support as needed.
  • The contract encompasses routine and as-needed inspections of a wide array of imaging equipment including CT MRI SPECT PET Dental CBCT Bone Densitometers and standard diagnostic radiographic systems.
  • The scope also includes design and inspection of radiation protection shielding collaboration on quality assurance programs and detailed compliance documentation aligned with national standards and VA regulations.
  • This is a critical role ensuring that imaging services provided by the VA meet the highest standards of patient safety radiation control and diagnostic quality.
