Job Title: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Technologist)

Location: Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) VA 23708 and associated Branch Medical Clinics (BMC) and TRICARE Prime Clinics (TPC) within a 40-mile radius.

Primary duty station will be NMCP or Sewells Point Branch Medical Clinic. No telework permitted.

Work Schedule:

NMCP: Day:(32 shifts/week) Evening:(7 shifts/week) Night:(7 shifts/week)

Sewells Point: Day:(5 shifts/week)

On-Call & Call-Back: Required for after-hours coverage; must report within 60 minutes

Holidays: 33 shifts/year

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience within the last 2 years independently performing sonographic exams in a clinical setting. One-year post-training ultrasound experience (training time not counted)
  • License/Certification: BLS; Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) through ARDMS certified in Abdomen and OB/GYN.
  • References: Provide 2 recommendation letters from the past 2 years verifying clinical and interpersonal skills. one from a radiologist or supervisory technologist and one from a healthcare peer or administrator. Each must include the referees name title contact info date and signature.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound exams across a wide range of specialties including Abdominal OB/GYN vascular soft tissue small parts and pediatrics
  • Emergency and STAT exams (e.g. appendicitis ectopic pregnancy torsion) NICU imaging (e.g. head bowel)
  • Assist with interventional procedures under ultrasound guidance (e.g. aspirations biopsies)
  • Document clinical findings and exam data accurately in MHS Genesis; transmit images to PACS
  • Prepare and position patients safely; explain procedures and ensure comfort and privacy
  • Maintain and disinfect equipment and examination rooms per infection control protocols
  • Perform daily quality control (QC) checks and participate in ongoing staff training and performance reviews
  • Support department operations through shift hand-offs crash cart checks and supply restocking
  • Coordinate care with physicians nurses and support staff to ensure high-quality patient outcomes
Comply with all Joint Commission DHA and ACR policies and standards
