The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check as well as other investigative reviews. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position unless restricted under state or federal law or federal restrictions. An individual assessment of an applicants prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration. All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. Testing will also be performed for the presence of marijuana. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment unless the applicant submits medical documentation of legally prescribed medications or a recommendation for medical marijuana. Also an applicant with a positive test will not be considered for any position with the State of Ohio for a period of one year.

The Division of Financial Institutions ensures Ohioans money is safe by regulating financial institutions and service providers. This includes examining supervising and regulating Ohio chartered banks and credit unions and licensing and regulating non-depository mortgage brokers mortgage loan originators and other consumer lenders. The Divisions Office of Consumer Affairs provides assistance to consumers to help resolve complaints against these institutions and works to provide education to Ohioans regarding financial literacy and other consumer protection topics.
What Youll Do:
The Division currently is looking to fill two separate Assistant Division Counsel positions:
Enforcement Attorney:
- Responsible for all regulatory regimes and license types administered by the Divisions Consumer Finance Section including: Ohios Small Loan Act Short-Term Loan Act Consumer Installment Loan Act General Loan Act check cashers mortgage companies mortgage brokers precious metal dealers and pawnbrokers.
Responsible for handling all aspects of a full enforcement docket including: evaluating the strength of cases conducting legal research as necessary developing and recommending investigative strategies drafting subpoenas and interviewing potential fact witnesses when necessary developing theories of the case and facilitating settlements drafting notices of intent and settlement and coordinating all aspects of administrative or civil enforcement actions with and through the Ohio Attorney Generals Office. Respond to inquiries from and provide legal advice to Consumer Finance staff on an as-needed basis. Works with Division Counsel and other staff on miscellaneous projects on an as-needed basis.
Regulatory Attorney:
- Provides legal advice and counsel to the Divisions Credit Union Section and Bank Section including the Bank Sections Money Transmission Unit on a variety a state and federal law issues.
- Reviews and makes recommendations regarding various types of corporate applications.
- Works with Division staff to ensure that chartered or licensed entities (i.e. banks credit units and money transmitters) are in compliance with applicable state and federal law.
- May be called upon to advise Division senior staff on state and federal legal developments (including but not limited to legislative issues).
- When necessary and under the guidance of senior Division staff involved in all aspects of Division enforcement matters relating to banks credit unions and money transmitters.
- Works with Division Counsel and other staff on miscellaneous projects on an as-needed basis.
Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Revised Code; 12 mos. exp. as licensed attorney; 6 mos. exp. in employee training & development.
